CHAPTER 7 — One Year Later

CHAPTER 7 — One Year Later

The headlines spread across Chicago before sunset.

HEIRESS WALKS AWAY FROM WEDDING AFTER EXPOSING GROOM AT ALTAR.

BILLION-DOLLAR MERGER COLLAPSES.

BRIDE DISCOVERS BETRAYAL MINUTES BEFORE VOWS.

For weeks, television panels, podcasts, and gossip columns debated the story.

Most people focused on the scandal.

Very few understood what happened after the cameras left.

Dylan Carter lost far more than a wedding.

Richard Reynolds kept his promise.

Every business agreement between Reynolds Holdings and Carter Development was immediately terminated.

Major investors, already uneasy after the public humiliation, quietly withdrew their support.

Banks demanded new guarantees.

Projects stalled.

Within six months, Carter Development announced massive layoffs.

By the end of the year, Dylan had resigned as CEO under pressure from the board.

The empire he had spent years trying to build collapsed under the weight of his own deception.

He blamed bad publicity.

The board blamed his judgment.

Deep down, he knew the truth.

He had traded the one person who truly loved him for ambition.

And in the end, he lost both.

Brooke Whitman disappeared from Chicago society almost overnight.

She resigned from her marketing firm.

Ignored phone calls.

Deleted every social media account.

The shame followed her everywhere.

Not because strangers judged her.

Because every morning she had to face the woman staring back in the mirror.

Several months later, she wrote Ava a handwritten letter.

Not asking for forgiveness.

Not making excuses.

Only telling the truth.

She admitted that the affair had begun after Dylan convinced her the engagement was already "emotionally over."

She admitted she had chosen selfishness over loyalty.

She admitted she deserved to lose her best friend.

Ava read every page.

Then quietly folded the letter.

She never replied.

Some wounds could heal.

Some relationships could not.

Autumn arrived.

On a cool October morning, labor began.

Richard paced the hospital hallway with nervous energy.

Diane cried almost as much as she had on the wedding day.

After fourteen exhausting hours...

A tiny cry echoed through the delivery room.

"It's a girl," the doctor announced.

Ava burst into tears.

The nurse gently placed the newborn on her chest.

The baby's tiny fingers wrapped around Ava's thumb.

In that instant...

Every heartbreak.

Every humiliation.

Every betrayal.

Lost its power.

"What will you name her?" the nurse asked softly.

Ava smiled through tears.

"Grace."

"Why Grace?"

"Because grace is choosing love after life gives you every reason to become bitter."

Three days later...

Dylan learned he had a daughter.

He arrived at the hospital carrying flowers that no one accepted.

Richard met him outside the maternity ward.

"You need to leave."

"I just want to see her."

"No."

"I have rights."

Richard looked at him steadily.

"You'll discuss rights with the court."

"I've changed."

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped aside just enough for Dylan to see through the small nursery window.

Grace slept peacefully in her bassinet.

Tiny.

Perfect.

Completely unaware of the adults whose choices had shaped her first days.

Dylan placed one hand against the glass.

His eyes filled with tears.

For the first time...

The cost of his decisions became real.

Not in dollars.

Not in headlines.

But in a child who didn't know his voice.

He whispered,

May you like

"I'm sorry."

Grace slept on.
