Chapter 8 - The Trap

The weeks following Carl Dempsey’s arrest were a whirlwind of legal filings, corporate restructuring, and media frenzy. The news that Nathan Whitmore’s daughter had been murdered as part of a corporate embezzlement scheme shook the financial world to its core. Nathan dissolved the old board of directors, fired every executive who had even looked at the offshore accounts, and turned the full resources of Whitmore Capital over to the federal investigators.
But while the city burned with gossip, the top three floors of Whitmore Tower became a sanctuary.
Jonah’s room was no longer the guest suite. Nathan had hired the finest interior designers to transform it into a space that belonged entirely to a ten-year-old artist. The walls were painted a soft, clean cream, and a massive oak easel stood near the window, surrounded by every type of pastel, charcoal, and canvas money could buy.
Yet, Jonah still slept on the floor beside the bed for the first month, curled on his blanket with his sketchbook beneath his pillow.
Nathan didn't force him to change. He didn't hire tutors or push him into private schools right away. Every morning, instead of going to board meetings, Nathan sat on the floor with Jonah, eating cereal and learning the names of the people Jonah had drawn over the last two years.
"This is Mrs. Higgins," Jonah said one morning, pointing to a charcoal sketch of an elderly woman with deep lines around her mouth. "She sells flowers by the train station. She gives me her old stems when they turn brown so I can smell them."
Nathan looked at the drawing, seeing the incredible depth of empathy in the child's lines. Jonah didn't just draw people; he captured their dignity. He captured the part of them that the city tried so hard to erase.
"We’re going to find Mrs. Higgins," Nathan said, setting his coffee down. "And we’re going to make sure she doesn't have to sell flowers in the cold anymore."

"Really?" Jonah asked, his eyes wide.
"Really," Nathan said. "Emily left a lot of work unfinished under that bridge, Jonah. I think it’s time you and I helped her finish it."
