CHAPTER 3 — THE MICROCHIP, THE MUTE WITNESS, AND THE FIRST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 3 — THE MICROCHIP, THE MUTE WITNESS, AND THE FIRST BETRAYAL
The towels lay scattered across the servants' corridor.
Meline didn't move.
The words echoed through her mind.
Kill her.
Mrs. Gable opened the linen room door so suddenly that Meline barely had time to kneel and gather the towels.
For one terrible second, their eyes met.
Mrs. Gable's smile appeared too quickly.
"You've become careless."
Meline lowered her head, apologizing with a small bow.
"You didn't hear anything, did you?"
Meline slowly shook her head.
Mrs. Gable studied her for several seconds.
A woman who had spent twenty years lying for criminals knew exactly how fear looked.
The young maid looked frightened...
But not guilty.
"Good."
Mrs. Gable walked away.
Only after her footsteps disappeared did Meline finally breathe again.
She had lied.
For the first time since arriving at Ravenhill.
That evening, Dominic called for her again.
When she entered the library, she found him standing beside a massive bookshelf.
He wasn't reading.
He was listening.
His fingers rested lightly on the wood.
"You stopped outside the linen room today."
Meline froze.
Dominic smiled faintly.
"People forget blind men still hear."
He turned toward her.
"Your breathing changed."
"You were frightened."
She slowly wrote on her notebook.
Someone was angry.
Dominic nodded.
"They usually are."
She hesitated before writing another sentence.
You aren't safe here.
His jaw tightened.
"I've known that for months."
She stared at him.
If he already knew...
Why hadn't he left?
Almost as if hearing the question inside her silence, Dominic answered.
"Because if I run..."
"...the men who stayed loyal to me die."
He walked toward the fireplace.
"They're watching."
"My accountants."
"My lawyers."
"My old captains."
"As long as I'm alive, Damian has to pretend I'm recovering."
"The day I disappear..."
"He becomes king."
Meline slowly understood.
Dominic wasn't hiding.
He was buying time.
Hundreds of miles away...
Detective Lucas Bennett stared at the burned microchip recovered from Pier 19.
The forensic technician adjusted her glasses.
"It survived because it was sealed inside a titanium watch."
Lucas inserted the chip into a recovery reader.
One corrupted file appeared.
VIDEO_017
He clicked.
Static.
Fire.
Shouting.
Then...
The image stabilized.
Dominic Vale entered the warehouse.
Behind him stood six trusted men.
The timestamp showed forty-three seconds before the explosion.
Then someone stepped into frame.
Damian Cross.
He wasn't supposed to be there.
Lucas frowned.
Another figure approached.
Victoria Langley.
She kissed Damian.
Not quickly.
Not secretly.
Like two people with nothing left to hide.
Lucas felt his pulse quicken.
Then Damian handed Victoria a black detonator.
The video froze.
The remaining file was corrupted.
But it was enough.
Enough to prove the explosion had never been an ambush.
It had been an execution.

Back at Ravenhill...
Dominic requested dinner in the greenhouse.
Mrs. Gable protested.
"It's too cold."
"I didn't ask your opinion."
The old housekeeper forced a smile.
"Of course, sir."
As servants prepared the table, Meline noticed something strange.
Mrs. Gable personally poured Dominic's wine.
She never did that.
Her hands trembled.
Only once.
But Meline saw it.
Mrs. Gable slipped a tiny clear vial into her pocket.
Poison.
Meline's heartbeat exploded.
She couldn't shout.
Couldn't warn him.
She looked wildly around.
Then grabbed the wine bottle.
Mrs. Gable spun around.
"What are you doing?"
Meline deliberately dropped the bottle.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Red wine splashed everywhere.
Mrs. Gable slapped her so hard she crashed against the wall.
"You stupid mute!"
Dominic stood instantly.
"What happened?"
Mrs. Gable answered first.
"She was clumsy."
Silence.
Then Dominic quietly asked,
"Meline."
He listened.
Her breathing was ragged.
Not embarrassed.
Terrified.
He turned toward Mrs. Gable.
"Come closer."
She obeyed.
Without warning—
Dominic struck her across the face with his cane.
The crack echoed through the greenhouse.
Everyone froze.
"You've worked for me eleven years."
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
"And yet..."
"You forgot something."
Mrs. Gable clutched her cheek.
"W-what?"
"I know the sound of fear."
He pointed toward Meline.
"She wasn't afraid of breaking a bottle."
"She was afraid for me."
Mrs. Gable said nothing.
Dominic spoke one sentence that made every servant pale.
"Tomorrow morning..."
"...someone else will inspect every meal I eat."
His head turned toward Meline.
"You."
Mrs. Gable realized the game was slipping away.
That night...
She called Damian again.
"He hit me."
Damian sounded bored.
"I warned you."
"He's trusting the girl."
"Then stop him."
"How?"
Silence.
Then Damian spoke coldly.
"If poison failed..."
"Make it look like theft."
"Frame the maid."
"And if Dominic still protects her..."
"...I'll come to Ravenhill myself."
