CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN ON THE DUSTY ROAD

CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN ON THE DUSTY ROAD

The sun was sinking behind the hills, painting the sky in shades of gold and crimson.

Emma Carter stood alone on a dusty roadside, clutching two toddlers against her chest. Her arms trembled from exhaustion. The boys were only eighteen months old, and carrying both of them at once had become harder every day.

Her faded jeans were stained with dirt. Her sneakers were worn through at the soles. Dark circles hung beneath her eyes like permanent shadows.

Life had not been kind to her.

Three years ago, she had dreamed of a beautiful future.

Now she was just trying to survive.

The roar of an engine interrupted her thoughts.

A black luxury SUV slowed beside the road.

Emma froze.

The vehicle looked expensive enough to buy every house in the small town combined.

The driver's door opened.

A tall man stepped out.

For a moment, Emma forgot how to breathe.

Lucas Harrington.

The man she had once loved more than her own life.

The father of her children.

The man who had disappeared without a trace.

Three years.

Three years of silence.

Three years of heartbreak.

Three years of raising twins completely alone.

And now he was standing right in front of her.

Lucas stopped moving.

His face turned pale.

His eyes locked onto Emma.

Then onto the two boys.

The world seemed to stop.

The children stared back at him.

They had his eyes.

His dark hair.

His smile.

The resemblance was impossible to miss.

Lucas swallowed hard.

"No..." he whispered.

Emma immediately turned away.

She didn't want him looking at them.

She didn't want him looking at her.

Most of all, she didn't want him reopening wounds that had never healed.

But Lucas stepped closer.

His voice shook.

"Emma... are they...?"

She cut him off instantly.

"Don't."

The coldness in her tone struck him harder than a punch.

For years, Lucas had imagined what he would say if he ever saw her again.

None of those words came.

Instead, he simply stared.

The boys shifted in Emma's arms.

One of them reached for a loose curl of her hair and giggled.

Lucas felt something break inside his chest.

Because he knew.

Without a doubt.

Those children were his.

And he had missed every moment of their lives.

Their first smiles.

Their first words.

Their first steps.

Everything.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked softly.

Emma laughed.

A bitter laugh.

The kind that comes after crying too much.

"Tell you?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You vanished, Lucas."

"I searched for you."

"I called."

"I begged."

"You never answered."

Lucas looked stunned.

"What are you talking about?"

Emma's jaw tightened.

For a moment, anger replaced the sadness in her eyes.

"When I found out I was pregnant, I tried to reach you."

"Every day."

"No response."

"When I went to your family estate, security threw me out."

Lucas stared at her.

Confusion flooded his face.

Because none of that made sense.

He had never received a single call.

Never received a single message.

Never even known she was pregnant.

Something was wrong.

Terribly wrong.

But before he could speak again, Emma adjusted the boys in her arms and started walking away.

"Emma, wait."

She didn't stop.

"Please."

Still she kept walking.

Lucas followed.

"Just tell me what happened."

Emma finally turned around.

Tears shimmered in her eyes.

Not fresh tears.

Old tears.

The kind that never completely disappear.

"What happened?"

Her voice cracked.

"I gave birth alone."

"I worked three jobs."

"I sold everything I owned."

"I spent nights wondering why the man I loved abandoned us."

The twins looked up at their mother, sensing her pain.

One of them wrapped tiny arms around her neck.

Lucas felt sick.

Every word felt like a knife.

Because whether he understood it or not, Emma believed he had abandoned her.

And judging by her suffering...

She had every reason to believe it.

A long silence settled between them.

Then Lucas spoke.

Very quietly.

"I swear to you..."

"I didn't know."

Emma looked at him for a long time.

Searching his face.

Trying to decide whether he was lying.

Trying to decide whether she hated him.

Trying to decide whether the sight of him still hurt because she loved him.

Finally, she turned away again.

"I'm not doing this."

"Emma—"

"Stay away from us."

Then she walked down the road and disappeared into the evening light.

Lucas stood frozen beside his SUV.

Watching the woman he had never stopped loving walk away with his sons.

His sons.

The realization hit him like a freight train.

Somewhere during the last three years, somebody had stolen an entire family from him.

And for the first time, Lucas Harrington was determined to find out who.
