Epilogue: Seventy-Nine Saturdays Later

Epilogue: Seventy-Nine Saturdays Later

One year later.

Central Park looked almost exactly the same.

The same pond.

The same green bench.

The same kiosk.

Grant approached the vendor.

"Three bottles?" the man asked.

Grant smiled.

"No."

The vendor looked confused.

Grant held up four fingers.

"Four."

The man hesitated.

Grant nodded toward the bench.

Emily was sitting there between Noah and Nora, helping them build paper boats from old sketchbook pages.

The twins were laughing so loudly that nearby children joined them.

Grant carried the bottles over.

Emily looked up.

"You bought too many."

"No."

He handed one to Noah.

One to Nora.

One to Emily.

Then kept the last for himself.

"For the first time in a long time..."

He looked toward the sky.

"...our family is complete enough to share four."

No one spoke.

They didn't need to.

The breeze carried children's laughter across the pond.

Somewhere nearby, a little girl chased bubbles.

A street musician played an old love song.

Life had not erased the pain.

Claire was still missed every single day.

Her photographs still lined the hallway.

Her favorite mug still sat in the kitchen.

Her rubber ducks still appeared in impossible places, discovered months apart, making everyone laugh.

Grief had not disappeared.

It had simply learned to stand beside joy instead of in front of it.

Grant finally understood what Claire's hidden note had meant.

Sometimes, when your own light grows too dim to see the way forward...

Someone else's laughter can become the lantern that leads you home.

And sometimes, all it takes to change a family's future...

May you like

...is one stranger who stops long enough to smile.

THE END.
