CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Hidden Behind the Perfect Marriage

CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Hidden Behind the Perfect Marriage

Victoria Whitlock did not go home after leaving the library.

Instead, she instructed her driver to take her downtown to Whitlock Tower.

She rarely visited her husband's office anymore. Their marriage had long since become a carefully managed partnership—two powerful names sharing one mansion while living entirely separate lives.

Today, however, she had questions.

And Victoria Whitlock hated unanswered questions.

Grant was still staring at the rejected check when Melanie stepped into his office.

"Your wife is here."

Grant looked up.

"I didn't schedule anything."

"I don't believe she's here for business."

Before Melanie could finish, Victoria walked in without knocking.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Only her eyes betrayed the storm beneath the surface.

She placed three printed photographs on Grant's desk.

One showed Claire kneeling beside Noah during Sports Day.

Another captured Claire holding Noah's hand on the award stage.

The last showed Grant speaking with Claire outside the library.

Victoria folded her arms.

"Care to explain?"

Grant barely glanced at the pictures.

"Our son was alone yesterday."

"I know."

"You knew?"

"I received the school's emails."

Grant slowly lifted his head.

"You knew Noah was waiting for us?"

Victoria shrugged.

"I had a fundraising luncheon."

"And I had meetings."

"So?"

Grant stood.

"So our eight-year-old asked to borrow another child's mother."

For the first time, Victoria's confident expression cracked.

"What?"

"He asked because no one came."

Silence filled the office.

Grant pushed the photographs toward her.

"Look at his face."

She looked.

Then quickly looked away.

"I don't have time for guilt trips."

"No."

Grant's voice was quieter than she had ever heard it.

"This isn't about guilt."

"It's about Noah."

Victoria walked to the windows overlooking Brookfield.

"I've provided him with everything."

Grant answered almost immediately.

"Everything except yourself."

She laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

"You've suddenly become Father of the Year?"

"I've become aware."

"Too late."

Those two words lingered between them.

Too late.

Grant couldn't argue.

Because she was right.

That evening, Noah returned from school expecting another silent dinner.

Instead, he stopped in the doorway.

The enormous dining table was empty.

Mrs. Alvarez smiled.

"Your father's waiting in the kitchen."

"The... kitchen?"

"We're eating there tonight."

Noah frowned.

The Whitlock kitchen was where chefs worked.

The family never ate there.

Curious, he walked in.

Grant stood beside the stove wearing a navy apron.

Flour covered one sleeve.

Smoke drifted lazily toward the ceiling.

The frying pan looked as though it had survived a small explosion.

Noah blinked.

"What happened?"

Grant looked over his shoulder.

"I attempted grilled cheese."

"You attempted?"

"It fought back."

Mrs. Alvarez covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

The sandwich resting on the plate was burned on one side and nearly raw on the other.

Grant sighed.

"I believe I've lost."

Noah stared at the sandwich.

Then...

Without warning...

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Not the tiny one Claire had heard.

A full, uncontrollable laugh that echoed through the kitchen.

Grant stood frozen.

He realized he had never heard his son's laughter this clearly before.

"I can make another."

"No."

Noah wiped tears from his eyes.

"I want this one."

"You do?"

"It looks funny."

Grant smiled.

"So does the cook."

For the first time...

Father and son sat at the same small kitchen table.

The grilled cheese tasted terrible.

Neither of them cared.

Across town, Claire tucked Lily into bed.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think Noah's dad listened?"

Claire remembered the sadness in Grant's eyes.

"I hope he did."

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

"I think Noah smiles differently now."

Claire smiled softly.

"I think you're right."

Neither of them noticed the dark SUV parked across the street.

Inside sat a private investigator with a camera.

Every arrival.

Every departure.

Every light inside the Mercer home.

Photographed.

Documented.

Watched.

The investigator dialed a number.

"Mrs. Whitlock?"

Victoria answered immediately.

"Well?"

"The woman doesn't seem interested in your husband."

Victoria's fingers tightened around her wine glass.

"I didn't ask about romance."

"No, ma'am."

"I asked whether she could become a problem."

She ended the call before the investigator could respond.

Her reflection stared back from the window.

If Grant's heart returned to his son...

It might also return to the parts of himself she could no longer control.

And Victoria never surrendered control willingly.

The following morning, Noah walked into school carrying something unusual.

A slightly crooked grilled cheese sandwich wrapped in foil.

Lily spotted it immediately.

"You brought lunch!"

Noah nodded proudly.

"My dad made it."

Lily opened her own lunchbox.

"My mom made mine."

They exchanged sandwiches without speaking.

Each took a bite.

Lily chewed thoughtfully.

"It's... very crunchy."

Noah smiled.

"It burned."

"I know."

"But your dad made it."

Noah nodded.

"Yeah."

May you like

Somehow...

That made it taste wonderful.
