CHAPTER 4: THE DNA TEST

CHAPTER 4: THE DNA TEST

The next morning dawned gray and cold.

But Ethan had not slept.

One question had consumed every waking second.

Not Victoria.

Not the wedding.

Not the scandal.

Only Lily.

How?

Why?

When?

He remembered Rosa from four years ago with startling clarity now.

The laugh.

The intelligence.

The way she challenged him without fear.

He also remembered disappearing.

At the time, his father had suffered a massive stroke.

The family company had been on the edge of collapse.

Board members demanded total silence.

His phone had been confiscated during negotiations after hackers targeted company executives.

By the time life slowed enough for him to breathe...

Rosa's number no longer worked.

He had searched for weeks.

Then months.

Eventually he convinced himself she had chosen to leave.

Now he wondered...

Had she ever known he looked?

Rosa sat beside Lily's hospital bed reading from a worn picture book.

A soft knock interrupted her.

She looked up.

Ethan.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Finally he asked,

"Can we talk?"

Rosa stepped into the hallway, quietly closing the door.

"I suppose we have to."

His eyes searched hers.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She looked away.

"You never asked."

"I didn't know."

"You stopped calling."

"My father nearly died."

"I know."

His head snapped up.

"You knew?"

"It was on every news channel."

"Then why..."

"You disappeared."

"I tried to find you."

"I moved."

"I hired investigators."

Rosa stared.

"What?"

"They couldn't."

She laughed bitterly.

"They couldn't find a pregnant graduate student working three jobs?"

"They never mentioned..."

Her voice broke.

"Because no one knew."

Silence settled between them.

Finally Ethan asked the question he feared most.

"Lily."

Rosa closed her eyes.

He already knew.

She could hear it in his voice.

"Yes."

One word.

Barely audible.

"She's yours."

Everything inside Ethan stopped.

He leaned against the wall.

Not because he was weak.

Because suddenly standing required effort.

He whispered,

"Four years..."

"Three."

"I missed everything."

Rosa nodded.

"Her first smile."

She nodded again.

"First steps?"

"Yes."

"First words."

Another nod.

His eyes filled for the first time in years.

"And she thought I didn't exist."

"No."

Rosa swallowed hard.

"She thought you were a story."

"What story?"

"The man with beautiful eyes who loved music."

Ethan covered his face.

For several seconds neither moved.

Then he asked quietly,

"Will you let me prove it?"

She knew what he meant.

"The DNA test."

"I don't need it."

"I do."

She understood.

Not because he doubted Lily.

Because he needed undeniable truth before the world inevitably challenged it.

She nodded.

"Okay."

Later that afternoon, samples were collected.

A simple cheek swab from Ethan.

Another from Lily.

The technician smiled kindly.

"Results should be back within twenty-four hours."

Victoria chose that exact moment to arrive.

Designer sunglasses.

Fresh makeup.

Flowers in hand.

She stopped dead when she saw Ethan sitting beside Lily's bed, helping the little girl color with her uninjured hand.

Lily looked up.

"Hi."

Victoria forced a smile.

Ethan didn't.

"I think you should leave."

Victoria blinked.

"In front of the child?"

"In front of everyone."

She lowered her voice.

"Ethan, we've both had time to calm down."

"I have."

"Good."

"So have I."

He stood.

"There will be no wedding."

The bouquet slipped from Victoria's fingers.

It struck the hospital floor.

"What?"

"I canceled it."

"You what?"

"I also reviewed security footage."

Her face lost all color.

For the first time...

Victoria realized this wasn't an argument.

It was the end.

May you like

And neither she nor Ethan yet understood that the DNA results arriving the next morning would destroy far more than an engagement.

They would expose a secret capable of rewriting the Caldwell family forever.
