CHAPTER 5 — The Last Gift

CHAPTER 5 — The Last Gift

Every eye in the ballroom followed Nathaniel as he walked toward Lily's birthday table.

The floor was still covered with torn wrapping paper, broken toys, and shattered ribbons.

Only one gift remained untouched.

It was different from the others.

No bright paper.

No oversized bow.

Just a simple ivory envelope tied with a narrow silver ribbon.

Lily looked up.

"Is that mine?"

Nathaniel smiled gently.

"It is."

He knelt beside her.

"I was saving it for last."

Victoria folded her arms.

"How touching."

Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

"A greeting card is hardly going to fix this disaster."

Nathaniel ignored her.

He untied the ribbon and handed the envelope to Lily.

"You can open it with your mommy."

Lily carefully pulled out a folded card.

She couldn't read yet, so she looked at Elena.

"Mommy?"

Elena unfolded the thick cream paper.

The first line stole her breath.

Her hands began to shake.

Mrs. Donnelly quietly wiped away a tear.

Nathaniel nodded.

"Read it."

Elena swallowed hard.

"I... I can't."

"You can."

Her voice barely emerged.

To Lily Carter,

Happy Third Birthday.

May you always grow up knowing that your worth is never measured by money, status, or the opinion of cruel people.

As your birthday gift, the Whitfield Family Foundation will establish the Lily Carter Education Trust.

The trust will fully fund your education—from preschool through university—and provide whatever academic support you need to pursue your dreams.

No child should have fewer opportunities because her mother works harder than the people who judge her.

Happy Birthday.

—Nathaniel Whitfield

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then dozens of guests gasped.

Someone whispered,

"My God..."

Another quietly asked,

"Did he say... fully funded?"

The foundation's legal director stepped forward carrying a leather portfolio.

"It's already been signed."

He opened the folder.

Official documents.

Bank certifications.

Trust agreements.

Everything had been completed two days earlier.

Nathaniel had planned this long before tonight.

Long before Victoria's humiliation.

Long before the broken presents.

Elena could no longer stand.

She sank slowly into a nearby chair.

"No..."

Tears streamed freely down her face.

"This is too much."

Nathaniel shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Lily.

"This is exactly enough."

He crouched until he was eye level with the little girl.

"You told me you wanted to become a doctor someday."

Lily nodded seriously.

"So people don't hurt anymore."

Nathaniel smiled.

"Then now you'll have every chance to do that."

She wrapped her tiny arms around him again.

"Thank you, Mr. Nate."

There wasn't a dry eye among the staff.

Even guests who had never spoken to Elena found themselves applauding.

At first only a few.

Then dozens.

Finally—

The entire ballroom erupted into applause.

Not for wealth.

Not for power.

But for kindness.

Victoria stood frozen.

The applause wasn't merely celebrating Lily.

It was condemning her.

Every clap reminded the room what she had destroyed.

Every smiling face became another witness.

She looked toward her parents.

Neither moved.

For the first time in years...

The Hale family had no influence to spend.

Then Nathaniel spoke again.

"I have one more announcement."

The applause faded.

He looked toward the foundation's attorney.

"Please continue."

The attorney adjusted his glasses.

"There is another document."

Victoria frowned.

"What document?"

The attorney looked directly at her.

"One concerning Miss Victoria Hale."

Her stomach tightened.

"I don't understand."

May you like

Nathaniel answered.

"You will."
