CHAPTER 2 – The Test

CHAPTER 2 – The Test
Arthur Penhaligon lay motionless on the king-sized bed, his breathing slow and steady, eyes closed.
He had perfected this routine.
Every new maid received the same unspoken test.
Some wandered into his study.
Some secretly photographed expensive artwork.
Others quietly slipped silver cutlery or jewelry into their bags.
A few simply quit after discovering how cold and lifeless the mansion felt.
Arthur had stopped believing in honesty long ago.
Outside his bedroom, Maya stood with a basket of freshly folded towels.
Mrs. Gordon's instructions echoed in her mind.
"Clean everything except Mr. Penhaligon's desk. Never disturb him if he's resting."
She knocked softly.
No answer.
She opened the door only a few inches.
The room was silent.
Dark curtains filtered the gray afternoon light across polished hardwood floors.
Arthur remained perfectly still.
Maya entered quietly.
She dusted the shelves.
Straightened a chair.
Folded a blanket lying near the fireplace.
Not once did she glance toward the expensive watch resting beside the bed.
Arthur listened carefully.
Most people couldn't resist.
She could.
Then Maya noticed something.
The room felt unusually cold.
She looked toward the window.
One side wasn't completely closed.
Rain drifted through the narrow opening, leaving tiny drops on the wooden floor.
Without hesitation, she crossed the room and gently shut the window.
The cold draft disappeared.
Arthur remained perfectly still.
Then Maya looked back at him.
His hands were pale.
His breathing sounded... different.
Uneven.
She frowned.
Years of nursing school returned instinctively.
She walked closer.
"Sir?" she whispered.
No response.
Arthur expected her to leave.
Instead...
She lightly touched the back of her fingers against his forehead.
Cold.
Too cold.
She checked his wrist.
His pulse was slower than normal.
Arthur almost opened his eyes in surprise.
None of the previous maids had ever cared enough to check.
Maya hurried toward the nearby cabinet.
She found a folded wool blanket.
Carefully...
Almost as if afraid of waking him...
She covered him from his shoulders to his feet.
Then she adjusted the pillow beneath his neck.
"You're overworking yourself," she murmured softly.
"Even if you're rich... your body still needs rest."
Arthur's heart skipped.
Nobody had spoken to him like that...
Not in years.
Maya noticed the untouched cup of black coffee on the bedside table.
She picked it up.
"It's ice cold," she whispered.
"You'll ruin your stomach."
She carried it away and returned minutes later with a fresh cup.
The warm aroma filled the room.
She placed it beside the bed.
Not expecting thanks.
Not expecting praise.
Only doing what she believed was right.
Before leaving, Maya paused at the doorway.
She looked once more at the lonely man sleeping in the enormous room.
Then she quietly said,
"I hope... whatever you're carrying... gets lighter someday."
The door closed.
Silence returned.
For nearly a full minute...
Arthur didn't move.
Then, slowly...
His eyes opened.
He stared at the neatly tucked blanket around his shoulders.
At the steaming cup of coffee.
At the rain no longer blowing through the window.
His chest tightened.
Three years.
Three long years since anyone had covered him with a blanket.
Three years since anyone had worried whether he had eaten... or slept.
He reached for the coffee.
It was still warm.
For the first time in what felt like forever...
Arthur Penhaligon smiled.
It was small.
Almost invisible.
But somewhere deep inside the empty mansion...
Something frozen had begun to thaw.
And neither he...
Nor Maya Snyder...
May you like
Had any idea that the locked room upstairs was about to bring their lives together in a way neither of them could ever imagine.
