CHAPTER 6 — THE JOURNAL'S FINAL CONFESSION

CHAPTER 6 — THE JOURNAL'S FINAL CONFESSION
The leather journal lay open in the center of the table.
Most of its pages contained financial ledgers, coded messages, and handwritten names.
Only the final section was different.
Every page had been written by Elena herself.
Marco carefully turned the first page.
"My dearest child...
If you are reading this, then I have already failed to protect you."
Claire's hands trembled.
The room disappeared around her.
Only her mother's handwriting remained.
"I was born into a family that believed loyalty mattered more than love.
They were wrong."
Claire continued reading aloud.
"When I learned I was carrying you, they demanded I choose between my family and my daughter."
"I chose you."
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"They promised to let us disappear.
Instead they sent men to kill us."
Marco clenched his fists.
Every sentence felt like another knife.
"I escaped because someone inside the family warned me."
Claire looked up.
"The journal never says who."
Julian quietly answered.
"I did."
Everyone turned toward him.
Marco stared in disbelief.
"You?"
Julian nodded.
"I was nineteen."
"I overheard the Council discussing Elena."
"I warned her before the assassins arrived."
Marco's jaw tightened.
"If that's true..."
"...why hide Claire for twenty-three years?"
Julian didn't answer immediately.
Instead he looked toward the last page.
Claire swallowed hard.
The final entry was shorter.
The handwriting was weaker.
Uneven.
Almost desperate.
"If they find me...
They will never stop searching for my daughter."
"I have hidden every record of her birth."
"I have trusted one person with the truth."
"If that person fails..."
"...my brother Marco must never learn she exists."
Marco frowned.
"What?"
Claire continued.
"He is too honorable."
"He would protect her openly."
"And that would get them both killed."
Marco slowly sat down.
His sister had hidden her own child from him.
Not because she didn't trust him.
Because she loved him enough to keep him alive.
Claire reached the bottom of the page.
There was one final sentence.
Written in darker ink.
As though added moments before Elena died.
"The greatest danger to my daughter is not outside this family."
"It is inside it."
The room fell silent.
Then one of Marco's bodyguards rushed through the doorway, breathing heavily.
"Boss!"
Marco looked up.
"What happened?"
The guard held up a tablet showing security footage from the estate.
Everyone leaned closer.
A black sedan had entered the property less than ten minutes earlier.
No one had noticed.
The driver stepped out.
Claire felt every muscle in her body freeze.
"I know him..."
The man removed his sunglasses and smiled directly toward the security camera.
It was Detective Richard Hayes.
The police officer who had led the investigation into Claire's disappearance.
The same detective who had declared her legally dead.
The guard looked at Marco.
"He says he has a warrant."
Claire's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"No..."
Marco narrowed his eyes.
"What is it?"
Claire stared at the screen in horror.
"He wasn't investigating my kidnapping."
"He helped make me disappear."
At that exact moment, every security monitor inside the mansion went black.
The power failed.
Darkness swallowed the estate.

And somewhere inside the house...
A woman screamed.
