CHAPTER 3 – THE BOY WHO COULDN'T KEEP THE SECRET

CHAPTER 3 – THE BOY WHO COULDN'T KEEP THE SECRET

The tube of industrial adhesive clattered down the marble staircase, each bounce echoing through Whitmore House like a countdown.

No one moved.

Oliver Whitmore stood frozen at the top landing, sixteen years old and suddenly looking like a frightened child instead of the confident heir everyone expected him to become.

Alexander's voice cut through the silence.

"Come downstairs."

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Oliver descended one step at a time, his hands trembling so violently he had to grip the banister.

Vanessa hurried toward him.

"Alexander, stop this. He's just scared."

"He should be."

Alexander never took his eyes off the teenager.

When Oliver reached the foyer, Alexander held up the magnet.

"Did you attach this to Iris's walker?"

Oliver opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa answered for him.

"This is absurd. He's sixteen. Why would he even touch a baby's walker?"

Alexander ignored her.

"I'm asking Oliver."

Grace stood in the corner holding Iris, whose frightened cries had finally quieted. The little girl buried her face against Grace's shoulder, refusing to let go.

Alexander noticed.

His own daughter wanted comfort from the nanny—not from him.

That realization hurt more than he expected.

Oliver finally whispered,

"I..."

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"You don't have to answer."

Alexander's expression darkened.

"He does."

Victoria stepped between them.

"This family will discuss this privately."

"No."

Alexander's voice was absolute.

"Not this time."

He looked toward the head of security.

"Seal every entrance."

The guards exchanged nervous glances.

"Sir?"

"You heard me."

Within seconds, the heavy front doors locked electronically.

Nobody was leaving.

Edward finally lost his temper.

"Have you lost your mind? You're imprisoning your own family over a servant?"

Alexander turned toward his younger brother.

"I'm protecting my daughter."

The distinction was unmistakable.

Family no longer guaranteed trust.

Twenty minutes later, everyone sat inside Alexander's private study.

The atmosphere resembled a courtroom more than a family meeting.

Oliver sat alone.

Vanessa beside him.

Edward paced near the fireplace.

Victoria remained perfectly composed.

Grace refused to sit, still holding Iris, while Clara slept against the housekeeper's shoulder.

Alexander placed the magnet and adhesive tube onto the desk.

"I've already called forensic investigators."

Vanessa's composure cracked.

"Forensics?"

"Yes."

"You can't seriously—"

"I can."

Alexander leaned forward.

"The adhesive on this magnet."

He pointed.

"The adhesive on Oliver's hands."

Another pause.

"And the fingerprints."

Oliver instinctively hid his palms.

Too late.

Alexander had already seen dried glue beneath two fingernails.

The billionaire's voice softened.

"Oliver."

The softness frightened everyone more than shouting would have.

"Tell me the truth."

The boy's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't mean..."

Vanessa interrupted again.

"Alexander, enough."

He slammed his hand onto the desk.

"ENOUGH!"

The room shook.

Even Victoria flinched.

Alexander stared directly at Oliver.

"Did you sabotage the walker?"

Oliver burst into tears.

"Yes."

Grace gasped.

Edward closed his eyes.

Victoria remained silent.

Alexander didn't react.

Not yet.

"Why?"

Oliver wiped his face.

"I only..."

His breathing became ragged.

"I only wanted Iris to fall."

Grace instinctively tightened her hold on the little girl.

Alexander felt every muscle in his body tense.

"You wanted a disabled two-year-old to fall?"

Oliver shook his head violently.

"No!"

"I mean..."

"I didn't think she'd get hurt."

"I just..."

His voice collapsed into sobbing.

"I wanted Grace to get blamed."

The room exploded.

Grace stared at him in disbelief.

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair crashed backward.

"Oliver!"

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Why Grace?"

Oliver answered before his mother could stop him.

"Because..."

He looked at Grace.

"You were supposed to leave."

Silence.

Alexander spoke carefully.

"Who said she was supposed to leave?"

Oliver hesitated.

Vanessa whispered,

"Don't."

Too late.

"My mom."

The words landed like dynamite.

Edward stared at his wife.

"...Vanessa?"

She laughed nervously.

"He's confused."

Oliver cried harder.

"No."

"You said if Grace disappeared..."

He looked at Alexander.

"...Aunt Victoria would finally hire Miss Lauren."

Grace frowned.

"Lauren?"

Alexander recognized the name instantly.

Lauren Pierce.

The private nanny Vanessa had recommended three months earlier.

The one Grace had quietly outperformed in every childcare evaluation.

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

"You don't understand."

Alexander stood.

"I understand perfectly."

"No, Alexander—"

"You manipulated your own son."

"I—"

"You framed an innocent woman."

"I was protecting this family!"

Alexander's expression became colder than marble.

"No."

"You were protecting your influence."

An hour later, police forensic specialists arrived.

Every member of the Whitmore household watched in stunned silence as fingerprints were collected.

Walker.

Magnet.

Adhesive.

Bracelet.

Grace voluntarily offered her fingerprints first.

Vanessa objected.

Alexander overruled her.

Within forty-five minutes, preliminary results came back.

The bracelet carried fingerprints from Victoria.

The jewelry box.

The maid's closet.

And...

Vanessa.

Not Grace.

The investigator looked up.

"Miss Ellison's fingerprints are absent."

Grace slowly closed her eyes.

Not because she had won.

Because she was finally believed.

Alexander looked at his mother.

"You planted it."

Victoria remained calm.

"I did what was necessary."

Edward stared at his mother in horror.

"...Mother?"

She spoke as though explaining simple mathematics.

"Grace was becoming too important."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

Victoria folded her hands.

"Iris reached for her before reaching for family."

"Clara cried when Grace left the room."

"You were beginning to trust an employee more than your own blood."

Grace lowered her eyes.

Victoria continued.

"That woman was replacing us."

Alexander laughed once.

A cold, humorless laugh.

"No."

He looked directly at his mother.

"She was doing what none of us bothered to do."

The truth silenced everyone.

Including Victoria.

That night, Alexander entered the nursery alone.

Grace was reading softly beside Iris's bed.

She immediately stood.

"I can leave."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

Grace hesitated.

"I know this house will never feel the same after today."

Alexander looked at his sleeping daughters.

"It already didn't."

He walked toward Iris.

The little girl stirred.

Without opening her eyes...

She reached for his finger.

Alexander froze.

For the first time in months...

His daughter chose him.

His throat tightened.

Grace smiled gently.

"She's been waiting."

Alexander whispered,

"For what?"

Grace looked at the child.

"For her father to come home."

Alexander closed his eyes.

He had built an empire worth billions.

Yet the smallest hand in the room had just shown him everything he had failed to build.
