Chapter 2 – The Secret Room Upstairs

He could still feel Vanessa's eyes on him.

Still feel that smile.

The smile of someone who believed they were untouchable.

That was what frightened him most.

Not the chores.

Not the dirt on Hannah's clothes.

The confidence.

As if she knew something he didn't.

As if she had already prepared for this moment.

Upstairs, Adrian sat Hannah on her bed.

His heart shattered all over again.

The room wasn't her room anymore.

The bright yellow curtains she loved were gone.

The shelves filled with books and stuffed animals had disappeared.

Even the framed drawings she'd made for him had been removed.

The room looked sterile.

Empty.

Temporary.

Like someone was trying to erase evidence that a child lived there.

"Daddy?"

Her voice was small.

Terrified.

Adrian knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart, tell me the truth."

Hannah immediately looked toward the door.

A habit.

A frightened habit.

The kind children develop when they're afraid of being overheard.

His stomach dropped.

"You're safe," he whispered.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then the tears came.

Big, silent tears.

The kind children cry when they've been holding everything inside for too long.

"She said you didn't want me anymore."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

Hannah's lip trembled.

"She said that's why you stayed away so long."

The room spun.

"She said you were happier without me."

Every word felt like a knife.

Three months.

Three months of business meetings, contracts, and time zones.

Three months trusting that his daughter was safe.

And during that time someone had been poisoning her against him.

"Daddy..." Hannah whispered. "Did Mom leave because she didn't want me either?"

Adrian broke.

Completely.

He pulled her into his arms.

"No."

The answer came out as a sob.

"No, sweetheart."

His late wife had adored Hannah.

Every second of every day.

The thought of their daughter believing otherwise was unbearable.

Then Adrian noticed something.

A bruise.

Small.

Faint.

Half-hidden beneath Hannah's sleeve.

His blood turned cold.

Carefully, he lifted the fabric.

Another bruise.

And another.

Old ones.

New ones.

Different stages of healing.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too hot.

Too dangerous.

"Hannah..."

His voice shook.

"Who did this?"

She looked down.

Silence.

Then—

"The nanny tried to stop her."

Adrian's heart stopped.

"What nanny?"

"The nice one."

Hannah sniffled.

"Mrs. Kelly."

Adrian remembered her.

Mrs. Kelly had worked for the family for years.

She adored Hannah.

She would never allow mistreatment.

"What happened to her?"

Hannah's answer came in a whisper.

"Vanessa fired her."

Adrian closed his eyes.

A terrible realization was forming.

Vanessa hadn't simply punished Hannah.

She had removed every adult who might protect her.

Every witness.

Every obstacle.

Every person loyal to Adrian.

At that exact moment, a knock came at the bedroom door.

Diane.

The housekeeper.

Her face was pale.

"Mr. Cole..."

"What is it?"

She glanced nervously down the hallway.

Then handed him a small envelope.

"I found this hidden behind Hannah's dresser."

Adrian frowned.

"What's this?"

Diane swallowed hard.

"I think Vanessa didn't know it existed."

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

No note.

No label.

Just a black USB drive.

His pulse quickened.

Something about it felt wrong.

Or maybe...

important.

Very important.

He immediately carried Hannah downstairs and handed her to Diane.

"Stay with her."

Then he walked into his office.

Locked the door.

Inserted the drive into his computer.

The screen loaded.

One folder appeared.

Its name was only two words.

FOR ADRIAN

His hands trembled.

The first video opened.

Mrs. Kelly appeared on screen.

The nanny.

The woman Hannah had trusted.

She looked terrified.

And injured.

A bruise darkened one side of her face.

Adrian's heart dropped.

Mrs. Kelly stared directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Mr. Cole, it means either I've been fired... or something worse."

A chill raced through him.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"Vanessa isn't doing this because she hates Hannah."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

The nanny continued.

"She's doing it because Hannah is standing in the way of something."

The next sentence nearly stopped his heart.

"Vanessa has been meeting secretly with your attorney."

Adrian sat upright.

"What?"

"There are documents," Mrs. Kelly whispered. "I heard them discussing guardianship... inheritance rights... and a plan to have Hannah declared emotionally unstable."

The room went silent.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to move.

Because suddenly Vanessa's confidence made sense.

The punishments.

The isolation.

The manipulation.

The lies.

This was never about discipline.

It was preparation.

Preparation for something much bigger.

Something that could give Vanessa control over hundreds of millions of dollars.

And if the video was telling the truth...

His daughter was the obstacle standing in the way.

Then another file automatically opened.

Security footage.

A date stamp from six weeks earlier.

Adrian leaned forward.

And the color drained from his face.

Because on the screen...

Vanessa wasn't alone.

She was sitting with someone Adrian trusted more than almost anyone.

Someone who had worked for him for fifteen years.

Someone who handled every legal matter in his life.

His attorney.

And together...

they were signing papers.

Documents labeled:

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODIAL REVIEW

Adrian's hands began shaking.

Because now he understood.

Vanessa wasn't smiling because she wasn't worried.

May you like

She was smiling because she thought she had already won.
