CHAPTER 4 – THE GHOST IN THE SECURITY ROOM

CHAPTER 4 – THE GHOST IN THE SECURITY ROOM
The Pennington mansion had been renovated three times over four decades.
Each renovation modernized the security system.
But Arthur insisted every old recording be archived.
He had once joked that successful businessmen survived because they never threw away evidence.
Tonight that habit might save him.
The security archive occupied a climate-controlled room beneath the west wing.
Rows of labeled steel cabinets stretched across the walls.
Margaret unlocked Cabinet Seven.
Inside sat dozens of carefully numbered hard drives and older digital tapes.
Arthur removed one labeled:
April 2007
The month Elena died.
A retired security technician named Daniel Mercer was called back to the estate within twenty minutes.
He looked surprised to find Arthur personally waiting.
"I thought these tapes would never be viewed again."
"So did I," Arthur replied.
Mercer connected the archived system.
The monitor flickered.
Static.
Then video.
The breakfast hallway.
April 14, 2007.
8:11 a.m.
The footage showed Elena carrying fresh tulips exactly as Arthur remembered.
She smiled at one of the housekeepers.
Walked toward the breakfast room.
Then disappeared from camera view.
Arthur closed his eyes.
"I know what happens next."
Mercer quietly fast-forwarded.
8:16.
Reginald Hatch entered the hallway.
Arthur frowned.
"Why was he here so early?"
Margaret looked confused.
"I thought he arrived after the ambulance."
"So did I."
The footage continued.
Reginald looked both directions before walking toward the East Gallery.
Not the breakfast room.
Not toward Elena.
Toward the gallery.
The same gallery where the hidden compartment had been discovered.
Arthur leaned closer.
"What time?"
Mercer checked.
"Eight sixteen and forty-three seconds."
Reginald disappeared into the gallery.
One minute.
Two.
Three.
He finally emerged.
Adjusting his tie.
Holding nothing visible.
Arthur felt ice crawl through his veins.
"Pause."
The screen froze.
Reginald's right sleeve was covered with white dust.
Plaster dust.
Exactly the same pale powder now resting behind Elena's painting.
Mercer enlarged the frame.
Margaret gasped.
"My God..."
Arthur stared without speaking.
Reginald had entered the gallery minutes before Elena collapsed.
He had come out carrying traces of fresh plaster.
Which meant someone had opened—or concealed—the hidden compartment that very morning.
The footage resumed.
At 8:24, the first scream echoed through the hallway.
Housekeepers rushed toward the breakfast room.
Reginald followed seconds later.
Perfectly composed.
Perfectly concerned.
Perfectly timed.
Arthur whispered,
"He wasn't responding to Elena."
Mercer looked over.
"He was making sure no one questioned where he'd been."
No one spoke.
The room fell silent again.
Then Elijah, who had quietly watched from the back, pointed at the monitor.
"Can you rewind?"
Mercer smiled kindly.
"What did you see?"
"The reflection."
"What reflection?"
"The silver vase."
Mercer rewound six seconds.
There, reflected faintly in the polished vase outside the gallery...
...was another figure.
A woman.
Only visible for less than a second.
Standing inside the gallery before Reginald entered.
Arthur's breathing stopped.
Elena.
She was alive.
She had been waiting inside the gallery.
Waiting beside the painting.
And when Reginald entered...
The camera could no longer see either of them.
Arthur stared at the frozen reflection.
For nineteen years, everyone believed the last place Elena stood before collapsing was the breakfast room.
But the security footage told a different story.
Her final private meeting...
Had been with Reginald Hatch.
And Arthur suddenly realized one horrifying possibility.
Elena hadn't hidden the ledger before she died.
May you like
She had hidden it...
Because she knew she was in danger.
