Chapter 2: The Test Results

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The only sound in the kitchen was the soft humming of the refrigerator.

I stared at Ingrid Vance.

At the woman threatening to take my daughter.

At the woman standing only feet away from the empty bottle Elena had poured down the drain.

And suddenly...

I wasn't afraid anymore.

Because fear had been replaced by something much stronger.

A mother's instinct.

Slowly, I picked up my phone.

Ingrid's eyes narrowed.

"What are you doing?"

I pressed a button.

A familiar voice immediately filled the room.

Arthur's voice.

"Vivienne? What's wrong?"

I swallowed hard.

"Come home."

The silence on the other end lasted only a second.

Then his tone changed.

"I'm leaving now."

The call ended.

For the first time all morning, Ingrid looked uncertain.

"Arthur is in a board meeting."

"He was," I replied.

The older woman crossed her arms.

"You think he'll choose you over his own mother?"

I didn't answer.

Because deep down, I wasn't sure.

That uncertainty frightened me more than anything.

An hour later, the front door slammed open.

Arthur rushed into the kitchen.

His tie was loosened.

His face pale.

His eyes immediately found me.

Then the baby.

Then Elena.

Then his mother.

"What happened?"

Nobody spoke.

I handed him the phone.

Arthur watched the recording once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

The room was silent.

When the video ended, he slowly lowered the device.

His hands were shaking.

"Mom?"

Ingrid scoffed.

"It's fake."

Arthur stared at her.

"Mom."

"It's edited."

Arthur's voice became harder.

"Mom."

For the first time in years, Ingrid looked uncomfortable.

Then Arthur asked the question nobody expected.

"What was in the powder?"

The kitchen fell silent.

Ingrid didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Arthur immediately turned toward Elena.

"Did you save any?"

Elena nodded.

With trembling hands, she reached into her pocket and produced a tiny plastic packet.

Inside was a small amount of the white substance she had secretly collected before dumping the bottle.

Arthur's face drained of color.

"Good."

He grabbed his phone.

"We're taking this to a lab."

Ingrid suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone turned.

The word had come too quickly.

Too desperately.

And that terrified Arthur more than anything else.

Because innocent people wanted testing.

Guilty people didn't.

Three days later, the results arrived.

Arthur opened the report.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The document slipped from his hands.

"Arthur?" I whispered.

He looked up.

Tears filled his eyes.

"The powder..."

His voice broke.

"It wasn't medicine."

My heart stopped.

"What was it?"

Arthur swallowed.

Then forced himself to say the words.

"A toxic sedative."

The kitchen spun around me.

My knees nearly gave out.

A toxic sedative.

In my daughter's bottle.

My baby.

My innocent little girl.

I heard Elena crying somewhere nearby.

Arthur's face was shattered.

He slowly turned toward his mother.

May you like

And for the first time in his life...

He looked at her like a stranger.
