CHAPTER 5: THE PRICE OF SAVING HER

CHAPTER 5: THE PRICE OF SAVING HER

The first gunshot shattered the station's front doors before Hannah could move.

Glass exploded across the marble floor.

Marcus instinctively threw her behind a ticket counter.

"Stay down!"

Bullets ripped through the empty waiting area, carving deep scars into the walls.

Outside, chaos erupted.

The men surrounding Union Station had expected frightened police officers.

Instead, they had found Caleb Rossi.

And Caleb Rossi never arrived unprepared.

Smoke grenades rolled beneath the attackers' SUVs.

Within seconds, thick gray clouds swallowed the parking lot.

Dark figures emerged from the smoke with terrifying discipline.

No shouting.

No wasted movement.

Only precision.

Every shot had purpose.

Every step had been planned.

Marcus peeked through a shattered window.

"They're not gangsters..."

Hannah looked at him.

"They're trained."

"Military."

Outside, Caleb walked through the smoke without drawing his weapon.

One attacker rushed him with an assault rifle.

Caleb sidestepped at the last possible second.

The rifle fired harmlessly into the pavement.

Caleb struck once.

The man's wrist snapped.

A second strike to the throat dropped him instantly.

Another gunman appeared behind him.

Before the trigger could be pulled, one of Caleb's bodyguards fired a non-lethal round, knocking the attacker unconscious.

Within less than three minutes...

The assault was over.

Seven attackers captured.

Five dead.

The rest had fled.

The silence afterward felt almost unnatural.

A black armored SUV stopped beside the station entrance.

Its rear door opened.

Caleb stood there, rain dripping from his coat.

"Come with me."

Marcus didn't move.

"I can't hand over a civilian."

Caleb's gray eyes met his.

"If she stays with the police..."

"They'll kill her before sunrise."

Marcus wanted to argue.

He couldn't.

Twice confidential police information had already been leaked.

Someone inside the system was feeding the enemy.

"You don't trust us."

"I trust you."

Caleb looked directly at Marcus.

"I don't trust the people standing behind you."

Marcus slowly lowered his weapon.

It was the closest thing to respect either man had ever offered the other.

An hour later, Hannah found herself entering a place she never imagined existed.

Beneath an abandoned warehouse on Portland's industrial waterfront...

An underground command center stretched beneath the earth.

Walls covered with surveillance monitors.

Encrypted communication systems.

Medical rooms.

Training facilities.

Maps of the entire city.

Nothing resembled the headquarters of a criminal empire.

It looked more like a private intelligence agency.

Doctors hurried past treating wounded men.

No one panicked.

No one raised their voice.

Everything operated with practiced efficiency.

Hannah stared.

"This is impossible."

Caleb answered calmly.

"The impossible usually survives longer."

He led her into a quiet office overlooking the operations floor.

On one wall hung dozens of framed photographs.

Not of criminals.

Children.

Families.

Graduation ceremonies.

Hospitals.

Scholarship recipients.

Hannah stepped closer.

Each picture showed different faces.

But always the same man standing quietly in the background.

Caleb.

"You know them?"

"I did."

"What happened?"

"They lived."

His answer confused her.

"Because of you?"

"Because someone finally reached them before the people who sold them."

The realization slowly spread across Hannah's face.

"The children..."

"The ones in my photograph."

Caleb nodded once.

"They're victims."

"Human trafficking."

"And the men at the docks?"

"The buyers."

Silence filled the room.

Then Hannah asked the question everyone in Portland wanted answered.

"Who are you?"

Caleb remained silent for several seconds.

Finally—

"My father built one of the largest criminal organizations on the West Coast."

Hannah listened carefully.

"When he died..."

"I inherited everything."

"You became the new boss."

"I destroyed most of it."

She frowned.

"What?"

"I kept the network."

"The money."

"The influence."

"But I changed what it was used for."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect you to judge me by what you see."

At that exact moment...

A steel door burst open.

One of Caleb's security chiefs rushed inside.

"They found us."

The room became silent.

"How?"

"No idea."

"But three convoys are moving toward the warehouse."

Marcus looked shocked.

"Already?"

"They tracked the memory card."

Caleb calmly picked up a pistol from his desk.

Then set it back down.

"No firearms inside."

Everyone looked at him.

"The lower level houses thirty-two rescued children."

A deadly calm settled over his face.

"We end this before they reach them."

Miles away...

Inside an abandoned church...

Five powerful crime bosses sat around an ancient wooden table.

Every family in Portland was represented.

One empty chair remained.

Caleb's.

An elderly man lit a cigar.

"We offered him peace."

Another replied,

"He chose the girl."

"He chose evidence."

"He chose war."

The oldest boss slowly nodded.

"Then burn everything he built."

A younger man smiled.

"And Hannah Collins?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"She dies first."

The warehouse assault began six minutes later.

Explosions tore through the loading docks.

Attackers poured inside from three separate entrances.

Except...

The building appeared empty.

No guards.

No resistance.

The invading force advanced deeper.

Then every steel security door slammed shut simultaneously.

Massive reinforced barriers separated the attackers into isolated groups.

A trap.

Hidden speakers crackled.

Caleb's calm voice echoed through the warehouse.

"You should have stayed outside."

May you like

The lights went out.

Screams followed.
