CHAPTER 7 — THE LAST KEY

CHAPTER 7 — THE LAST KEY

Dozens of red laser sights danced across the snow.

Every tree seemed to hide another rifle.

Nora slowly raised her hands.

Luca did not.

The silver-haired commander stepped forward, his polished boots crunching through the fresh snow.

"Drop your weapon."

Luca's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

The commander smiled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Before anyone could react, floodlights ignited across the forest.

Armored vehicles emerged from between the trees.

Not Black Harbor.

Not Moretti soldiers.

Their uniforms bore no insignia.

Only a black phoenix stitched onto their sleeves.

The commander's confidence vanished.

"What...?"

A calm female voice echoed through loudspeakers.

"Operation Ashfall is now under federal authority."

"Lay down your weapons."

"Anyone resisting will be treated as hostile."

Gunfire erupted from every direction.

The forest became chaos.

Black Harbor soldiers fired at the newcomers.

The newcomers answered with disciplined precision.

Within seconds, the snow was filled with smoke and flashing muzzle fire.

Luca grabbed Nora's arm.

"Move!"

"But who are they?"

"I don't know."

For the first time since they'd met...

He sounded genuinely uncertain.

They ran deeper into the forest until they reached the edge of a frozen canyon.

There was nowhere else to go.

Behind them, footsteps approached.

Nora turned.

Not soldiers.

A single elderly man walked calmly through the snowfall, carrying nothing but a wooden cane.

His white hair blew in the wind.

His eyes stopped on Nora.

He smiled sadly.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Everything inside Nora froze.

"...Who are you?"

"My name is Gabriel Vasquez."

"My grandfather died before I was born."

"So you were told."

He looked toward Luca.

"Thank you for keeping her alive."

Luca lowered his weapon.

Something Nora had never imagined seeing.

Respect.

"You knew him?" she asked.

Gabriel nodded.

"I helped raise him."

Nora could barely speak.

"Then... you know who my parents were."

"I do."

"Were they murdered?"

"No."

"They chose to disappear."

"Why?"

Gabriel looked toward the wooden box still clutched against her chest.

"Because everything you think this has been about..."

"...was never about money."

He gently touched the box.

"This contains the master encryption key to a financial network that secretly funded hospitals, orphanages, disaster relief, and anti-trafficking operations across three continents."

Nora stared in disbelief.

"The criminal syndicates wanted the fortune."

"They never realized the fortune had already been given away."

"So there are no billions?"

Gabriel smiled.

"There never were."

"The accounts were emptied twenty-five years ago."

Luca closed his eyes.

"So everyone has been killing each other..."

"...for an empty vault."

May you like

Gabriel nodded.

"They were chasing a ghost."
