CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN'T BURY

CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN'T BURY
The drive to the hospital felt endless.
Every red light seemed personal.
Every passing minute fed a growing fear I couldn't name.
By the time I reached the maternity clinic, Dr. Melissa Grant was already waiting outside the secure records office.
Her expression told me this was no clerical error.
"It's you," she said quietly.
"They specifically requested your file."
"Who?"
"We're still investigating."
She led me into a small conference room where the hospital's privacy officer sat with a laptop.
"The request came through an authorized family-access form."
"I never signed one."
"You didn't."
He turned the screen toward me.
Someone had uploaded a forged consent form.
My signature had been copied almost perfectly.
The listed emergency contact—
Margaret Rossi.
My stomach turned.
"This is fraud."
"Yes."
"And we have already referred it to law enforcement."
The security officer clicked one more tab.
The access log showed that someone had viewed:
My ultrasound images.
My prenatal genetic screening.
My doctor's notes.
My home address.
My emergency contacts.
Not downloaded.
Viewed.
Repeatedly.
Whoever had done it wasn't looking for medical information.
They were watching me.
Before leaving, Dr. Grant placed a hand gently over mine.
"Your baby is healthy."
"I checked again myself."
She smiled.
"Heartbeat is strong."
For the first time in days...
I cried from relief instead of fear.
That evening I went straight to the police station.
Officer Dana Brooks didn't look surprised when she saw the forged documents.
"I was hoping you would come."
She opened a folder.
"We've been digging."
"Into Margaret?"
She nodded.
"We found financial records."
Large cash withdrawals.
Private investigator payments.
Property purchases under different names.
One abandoned farmhouse purchased twenty-six years earlier.
The same month Emily Harper disappeared.
A search warrant was approved within forty-eight hours.
Richard insisted on coming.
"I owe Emily that much."
The farmhouse sat deep in overgrown woods.
Broken windows.
Collapsed porch.
Silence.
Inside, investigators found little.
Dust.
Rotting furniture.
Old newspapers.
Then one officer noticed fresh concrete beneath a section of the basement floor.
Not twenty-six years old.
Much newer.
They broke through it.
Inside wasn't a body.
It was a metal storage trunk.
Locked.
When they forced it open...
Everyone stopped breathing.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Letters.
Photographs.
Birth certificates.
Bank records.
And a thick journal.
The first page carried Emily Harper's handwriting.
If someone finds this... Margaret lied.
Emily had escaped.
Not disappeared.
According to the journal, Richard had secretly given her money after realizing Margaret intended to destroy evidence of the pregnancy.
Emily fled to Canada using relatives' help.
She gave birth to a baby girl.
To protect her daughter, she never contacted anyone connected to the Rossi family again.
Years later, Emily died from cancer.
Before her death, she left every document inside the trunk to a trusted friend.
That friend, terrified of Margaret, hid everything in the farmhouse Richard had quietly purchased decades earlier as insurance against the truth being lost forever.
Richard fell to his knees.
He covered his face with both hands.
"I thought she was dead."
His voice broke.
"I believed Margaret."
For twenty-six years...
He had mourned someone who had survived.
Then Officer Brooks unfolded the final document.
A birth certificate.
Mother:
Emily Harper.
Father:
Richard Rossi.
Child:
Claire Harper.
Emily's daughter had lived.

She was alive.
Thomas had a half-sister he never knew existed.
