CHAPTER 5: THE LIVE BROADCAST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 5: THE LIVE BROADCAST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
By sunrise in Seoul, the hashtag had exploded.
#WhoIsEthanCollins
Then another.
#ChairmanHanLookAlike
By lunchtime, sports commentators were no longer discussing Ethan's footwork or his scholarship.
They were comparing photographs.
One side of the screen showed Daniel Han at twenty-four after winning his first international business award.
The other showed Ethan during his championship match in Atlanta.
The same sharp jaw.
The same intense eyes.
The same habit of pressing his lips together before speaking.
Television producers called it coincidence.
The internet called it destiny.
Inside Han Global, executives called it a crisis.
Vice Chairwoman Han Ji-Sook stood at the head of the emergency boardroom table.
Twenty-three executives sat in complete silence.
A giant screen displayed Ethan's smiling face.
Ji-Sook tapped the remote.
The image disappeared.
"No one," she said calmly, "will contact the scholarship recipient."
No one questioned her.
Until a younger director finally spoke.
"But Chairman Han personally approved international athlete outreach yesterday."
"He has changed his mind."
The director frowned.
"Has he?"
Ji-Sook's eyes hardened.
"Are you asking me whether I speak for the chairman?"
The room immediately fell silent.
At that exact moment...
Daniel Han's private jet landed in Anchorage for refueling before continuing to Atlanta.
The moment the aircraft touched down, his satellite phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID.
Ji-Sook.
He answered.
"What have you done?"
Her voice remained perfectly composed.
"I should ask you the same question."
"I'm going to America."
"I know."
"You won't stop me."
A long pause.
Then she said quietly,
"If that boy is truly your son..."
Daniel interrupted.
"He is."
"You don't know that."
"I know."
Another silence.
Finally Ji-Sook spoke.
"There are things you still don't understand."
Daniel's voice turned cold.
"I understand enough."
"No."
"You don't."
"Twenty-five years ago, Mother protected this family."
Daniel clenched the phone.
"Protected?"
"She destroyed my life."
"And perhaps saved yours."
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
For the first time in decades...
His certainty began to crack.
Meanwhile...
Atlanta.
The television interview had transformed Ethan into an overnight sensation.
Reporters crowded outside Maya's small home.
News vans lined the street.
Neighbors peeked through curtains.
Microphones stretched across the front lawn.
"Mr. Collins!"
"Did you know Chairman Daniel Han?"
"Is there a family connection?"
"Can your mother comment?"
Maya locked every door.
She pulled every curtain closed.
"This is getting out of control."
Ethan looked through the blinds.
"They're not leaving."
"No."
She whispered.
"They're waiting for us to make a mistake."
The doorbell rang.
Neither of them moved.
Then it rang again.
Again.
Again.
Finally...
A familiar voice called from outside.
"Ethan!"
He relaxed slightly.
"Coach Ramirez."
Maya opened the door only a few inches.
Coach Luis Ramirez stepped inside quickly before reporters noticed.
The sixty-year-old coach had trained Ethan since he was twelve.
He looked unusually serious.
"I came as soon as I saw the news."
Ethan forced a smile.
"You too?"
Coach Ramirez shook his head.
"I don't care who your father is."
"I care that somebody's digging into your life."
He reached into his jacket.
"I think you need this."
He handed Maya a faded envelope.
Her face drained of color.
"Where did you get this?"
"A man gave it to me twenty-four years ago."
She stared.
"What man?"
Coach Ramirez frowned.
"A Korean."
"He came looking for you."
The room fell completely silent.
"What?"
"He arrived at the soccer field where I used to coach."
"He asked if I knew a woman named Maya Collins."
"You had already moved."
"I couldn't find you."
"So he left this."
Maya's hands trembled violently.
She looked at the postmark.
December...
Only weeks after she had returned from Seoul.
She carefully opened the envelope.
Inside...
A single letter.
Never opened.
Never read.
Because it had never reached her.
The handwriting...
Daniel's.
Her knees almost gave way.
Ethan caught her before she fell.
"Mama?"
She unfolded the paper.
The ink had faded, but every word remained clear.
My dearest Maya,
I don't understand why your letters stopped.
Mother says you've chosen another life, but I cannot believe it.
I am coming back to America as soon as the doctors allow me to travel.
Please wait for me.
Whatever happens...
I love you.
Always.
Daniel.
The letter slipped from Maya's fingers.
Twenty-five years...
Gone.
Destroyed by one missing envelope.
May you like
She whispered through tears,
"He never left me..."
