CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE
The next morning, Jenny woke before sunrise.
She quietly slipped out of bed so Noah could sleep.
The apartment was still.
Too still.
She checked the mailbox downstairs.
Empty.
No eviction notice.
Strange.
She climbed back upstairs carrying nothing.
Outside her apartment door sat two brown paper bags.
No note.
Inside were fresh fruit.
Bread.
Eggs.
Milk.
Chicken soup.
Children's vitamins.
Asthma-friendly snacks.
Every item Noah's doctor had recommended months ago.
Jenny's heart sank.
She knew exactly who had sent them.
She carried everything inside.
Then she noticed one final envelope resting beneath the bags.
No name.
No signature.
Only one sentence printed on the front.
"For Noah."
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a pharmacy card.
Unlimited pediatric prescription coverage.
Already activated.
Attached was another sheet.
No logos.
No company name.
Only eight typed words.
No mother should choose between food and breathing.
Jenny stared at the page.
Then she burst into tears.
Not because of the money.
Because someone had seen her struggle...
without asking her to prove she deserved help.
Across the city, Marco watched security footage from one of the neighboring buildings.
Not to invade her privacy.
Only to confirm the groceries had been delivered safely.
He saw Jenny open the envelope.
Saw her cover her mouth.
Saw her cry.
Then she did something unexpected.
She looked directly toward the street.
Toward the black SUV parked two blocks away.
Their eyes couldn't possibly meet from that distance.
Yet Marco felt as though she knew.
His phone rang.
Luca answered before handing it over.
"We found something."
Marco's expression hardened.
"What?"
"The father."
"I thought he was unknown."
"He changed his name."
Marco slowly stood.
"And now?"
Luca's voice became unusually serious.
"He's alive."
Marco's eyes narrowed.
"And he's one of the richest businessmen in Chicago."
Silence filled the SUV.
Then came the final sentence.
"He's announcing his campaign for governor tomorrow..."
"...with his perfect family standing beside him."
Marco's grip tightened around the phone.
A man had abandoned a sick child to protect his reputation.
That alone disgusted him.
But when Luca added one more detail...
Marco's entire expression changed.
"The campaign headquarters ordered Benson to force Jenny out before next week."
"Why?"
"So no reporter would ever find her."
Marco slowly looked back toward Jenny's apartment.
This had never been about unpaid rent.
Someone powerful wanted her erased.

And whoever had started this war...
Had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
