CHAPTER 4 — The Woman in the Photograph

CHAPTER 4 — The Woman in the Photograph
Three days later, Emma laughed for the first time in weeks.
The chemotherapy was working.
Not perfectly.
Not yet.
But well enough that she asked for pancakes instead of crackers.
The nurses celebrated as though someone had won the lottery.
Lila cried in the hallway where Emma couldn't see.
Jonathan happened to walk past.
He handed her a handkerchief without saying a word.
"You don't have to hide from me."
She smiled weakly.
"I've been hiding from everyone for years."
Before Jonathan could answer, Marcus Hale arrived carrying a sealed envelope.
"I have something you need to see."
Jonathan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
One showed twelve-year-old Lila leaving a public school.
Another showed her entering a black SUV with tinted windows.
The next image froze Jonathan's heartbeat.
Standing beside the SUV...
...was a woman wearing an elegant cream-colored coat.
Beautiful.
Composed.
Expensive.
Jonathan knew her face immediately.
His own mother.
Evelyn Mercer.
Jonathan slowly looked up.
"Where did you get these?"
Marcus answered carefully.
"A retired private investigator."
"He'd been paid to follow someone."
"Who?"
"Lila."
Jonathan's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Who hired him?"
Marcus hesitated.
"The payments came from a trust."
"What trust?"
Marcus swallowed.
"The Mercer Family Trust."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan stared at the photographs as if they belonged to another life.
"My mother..."
"...had Lila followed?"
Marcus nodded.
"It appears so."
Jonathan's hands tightened around the envelope.
"No."
"She never mentioned this."
"She barely knew Mary Hart."
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"Sir..."
"I don't think that's true."
Jonathan drove directly to his mother's estate in Lake Forest.
Evelyn Mercer was hosting one of her famous charity luncheons.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled.
String musicians played softly.
Chicago's wealthiest families laughed over imported tea.
Jonathan entered without greeting anyone.
Every conversation stopped.
His mother looked up from the head of the table.
"Jonathan."
"What a surprise."
He placed the photographs in front of her.
The smile disappeared from her face.
"Where did you get these?"
"So you admit they're real."
She said nothing.
Guests quietly excused themselves.
Within minutes the enormous dining room was empty except for mother and son.
Jonathan spoke first.
"You knew Lila."
"I knew of her."
"That's not what these pictures say."
Evelyn remained perfectly composed.
"I was protecting this family."
"From a twelve-year-old girl?"
"From what followed her."
Jonathan felt anger rising.
"What followed her?"
His mother looked directly into his eyes.
"Her mother didn't become ill by accident."
Jonathan stopped breathing.
"What?"
Evelyn stood slowly.
"You've believed the wrong story for twelve years."
Jonathan whispered,
"Then tell me the right one."
His mother's answer came like ice.
"Ask the man who poisoned Mary Hart."
Jonathan frowned.
"Who?"
Evelyn looked toward the rain-covered windows.
"The man..."
"...who is Emma's real father."
Jonathan's heart slammed against his ribs.
"What are you talking about?"
Evelyn closed her eyes for a long moment.
"The child believes her father abandoned her."
"Lila believes she escaped him."
She opened her eyes again.
"But monsters..."
"...don't simply walk away."
Before Jonathan could ask another question, every light in the mansion suddenly went dark.
The chandeliers died.
The security alarms began screaming.
Outside, tires screeched across the circular driveway.
A guard shouted from the entrance.
"Mr. Mercer!"
"They've breached the gate!"
Then came the unmistakable sound of gunfire.
May you like
Someone had come to the Mercer estate.
And they were not there to talk.
