CHAPTER 4 – THE LETTER THAT NEVER REACHED HIM

CHAPTER 4 – THE LETTER THAT NEVER REACHED HIM
The rain began just before sunrise.
It tapped softly against the windows of Mercy General Hospital, the same steady rhythm that had filled the air seven years earlier on the night Elena Ashford vanished.
Adrien had not slept.
The resignation letter lay open on his desk beside the newspaper clipping.
He read both again.
Then a third time.
The facts refused to fit together.
Elena disappeared.
A pregnant woman was nearly killed two weeks later.
One baby survived.
Norah was seven.
Norah had his family's rare heart defect.
Norah had gray-green eyes.
Gray-green eyes exactly like his own.
He leaned back, pressing his palms against his temples.
"No..."
If it were true...
She had been carrying his child.
Across the hall, Norah was already awake.
She colored quietly while Lena pretended everything was normal.
"What are you drawing?" Lena asked.
"A family."
Lena smiled weakly.
"Can I see?"
Norah turned the paper around.
Three people stood beneath a sky filled with stars.
A little girl.
A woman.
A tall man with dark hair wearing a white coat.
Lena stared.
"Who's he?"
Norah shrugged.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"I dreamed him."
Lena's chest tightened.
"He was fixing my heart."
A knock interrupted them.
Not Adrien.
An older gentleman entered instead.
Tall despite his age, silver-haired, wearing a charcoal suit rather than a lab coat.
His posture carried quiet authority.
"Mrs. Marsh?"
"Yes?"
"My name is Dr. Samuel Whitmore."
Lena's blood turned cold.
She recognized him instantly.
He had once been the chairman of Mercy General.
And Vivian Cross's oldest friend.
"I'd like a few moments to speak with you."
"I have nothing to say."
"I believe you do."
Norah looked between them.
"I'll wait outside," Samuel said gently.
"I'd rather not."
His eyes settled on the sleeping bunny beside Norah.
"This concerns her."
Minutes later they stood alone in the hospital garden.
Samuel spoke first.
"I know who you are."
Lena remained silent.
"I also know why you ran."
"You know nothing."
"I know Vivian came to see me seven years ago."
Lena froze.
"She asked me one question."
He looked away.
"'How do I convince a pregnant girl that leaving is the kindest thing she can do?'"
Lena's face lost all color.
Samuel continued quietly.
"I told her not to interfere."
"But she did anyway."
Lena whispered,
"I heard Adrien tell her... he understood."
Samuel sighed.
"You heard half a conversation."
"What?"
"Vivian demanded he end the relationship."
"And?"
"He answered, 'I understand what you're asking.'"
Samuel met her eyes.
"His next sentence was..."
"But I'm going to marry her anyway."
The world stopped.
Lena couldn't move.
Couldn't think.
Couldn't breathe.
"No..."
Tears filled her eyes instantly.
"No..."
"You left before he finished speaking."
Seven years.
Seven years built on one unfinished sentence.
Samuel reached into his briefcase.
"I've carried something for far too long."
He handed her a sealed envelope.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
To Elena.
From Adrien.
She stared in disbelief.
"I wrote it?" she whispered.
"No."
"Adrien did."
"He asked Vivian to deliver it."
Lena's hands began shaking violently.
"She never did."
Slowly...
Carefully...
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single folded page.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The first line blurred through her tears.
"Elena,"
"Whatever my mother says..."
"Whatever you hear..."
"Please wait for me."
"Because I'm choosing you."
"Always."
May you like
Lena collapsed onto the garden bench, sobbing with a grief that had been waiting seven long years to be released.
Inside the hospital, completely unaware that his lost past had just been uncovered, Adrien walked toward Norah's room... carrying the final surgical plan that could save his daughter's life—before he even knew she was his daughter.
