CHAPTER 8 — The Life They Almost Lost

CHAPTER 8 — The Life They Almost Lost

Six months later...

Spring had finally arrived in Chicago.

Grace stood in the backyard planting flowers.

Noah chased their golden retriever across the grass.

Dominic struggled to assemble a wooden treehouse.

"This piece doesn't fit."

Noah laughed.

"You built an empire but can't build a treehouse?"

Grace burst into laughter.

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"I liked him better when he thought I was scary."

Noah grinned.

"I still do."

The family laughed together.

It felt...

Normal.

Something Dominic had never experienced before.

The Russo organization no longer existed.

Dominic had dismantled it completely.

Every legitimate business was sold or donated.

The money funded hospitals.

Schools.

Shelters.

Scholarships.

Victims' compensation programs.

Reporters called it impossible.

Former enemies called it madness.

Dominic called it repayment.

One afternoon...

A moving truck stopped outside Grace's house.

Noah looked confused.

"Who's moving?"

Dominic smiled.

"We are."

Grace looked at him.

"We?"

He nodded.

"I bought the empty land next door."

"You said you wouldn't pressure me."

"I'm not."

He pointed toward the construction site.

"It's two houses."

Grace frowned.

"Two?"

"You said trust takes time."

"So..."

He smiled sheepishly.

"...we'll be neighbors."

Grace laughed so hard she nearly cried.

"You planned this?"

"For three months."

She shook her head.

"You're impossible."

"I've been told."

Noah suddenly shouted,

"Can I have bedrooms in both houses?"

Dominic answered instantly.

"You can have whichever house your mom says."

Grace smiled.

"Smart answer."

"I learn quickly."

Weeks passed.

The distance between the two houses slowly disappeared.

Sometimes Noah fell asleep watching movies at Dominic's.

Sometimes Dominic stayed for dinner.

Sometimes Grace caught herself smiling before he even walked through the door.

One evening...

Noah looked between them during dinner.

"Can I ask something?"

"Of course," Grace said.

"When are you two getting married again?"

Grace nearly dropped her fork.

Dominic coughed into his water.

Noah looked genuinely confused.

"What?"

Grace laughed.

"We're...working on things."

Noah sighed dramatically.

"Adults are slow."

EPILOGUE — Seven Years Lost... A Lifetime Found

One year later.

Christmas Eve.

Snow fell softly over Chicago.

The same little house glowed with warm lights.

Except now...

The neighboring house glowed too.

A wooden gate connected both backyards.

No walls.

No fences.

Just one family.

Dominic stood beside the Christmas tree holding a small velvet box.

Grace looked at him knowingly.

"You planned another surprise?"

He nodded nervously.

"I've faced assassins."

She smiled.

"But this scares you?"

"Much more."

Noah peeked from behind the staircase.

"Dad's shaking."

Grace laughed.

"I noticed."

Dominic knelt before her.

"Seven years ago..."

"I threw away the greatest gift I'd ever been given."

"I can't erase those years."

"I can't undo the pain."

"But if you'll let me..."

"I'd like to spend the rest of my life making up for every Christmas..."

"...every birthday..."

"...every ordinary day I missed."

He opened the box.

Inside rested the same wedding ring he had carried for seven years.

"Grace Miller..."

"No."

He smiled.

"Grace Russo..."

She interrupted him with tears in her eyes.

"You haven't even asked."

Dominic laughed softly.

"Right."

He took a deep breath.

"Will you marry me again?"

Grace looked at the man before her.

Not the feared mafia boss.

Not the billionaire.

Not the legend whispered about across Chicago.

She saw only the father who had taken a bullet for his son.

The man who had walked away from power to become worthy of love.

She whispered one word.

"Yes."

Before Dominic could even stand—

Noah tackled both of them into the snow.

"I knew she'd say yes!"

All three burst into laughter.

Above them, Christmas lights shimmered against the winter sky.

Seven years had been stolen from them.

They could never get those years back.

But they had something even more precious.

Tomorrow.

And every tomorrow after that.

Sometimes the strongest man in the world isn't the one who rules an empire.

Sometimes...

May you like

He's the one who comes home.
