CHAPTER 4 — The Door They Locked Couldn't Keep Me In

CHAPTER 4 — The Door They Locked Couldn't Keep Me In

I barely slept.

Not because I was frightened.

Because I was thinking.

Around three in the morning, I heard footsteps outside the guest bedroom where I had locked myself.

Not Dylan.

Too light.

Too careful.

A soft knock followed.

Three taps.

Then silence.

I opened the door cautiously.

Mary stood there.

The elderly housekeeper.

She held a small tray with tea.

"I thought you might not sleep."

I accepted it.

"Thank you."

She looked down the hallway before whispering,

"They've done this before."

The words settled into my chest like cold stone.

"Before?"

She nodded.

"There was another woman."

My pulse quickened.

"Dylan was engaged three years ago."

"What happened?"

Mary's eyes filled with sadness.

"She disappeared."

I frowned.

"What do you mean disappeared?"

"She packed one suitcase."

"Left before sunrise."

"No one has heard from her since."

Mrs. Sterling told everyone she had suffered a nervous breakdown.

"But..."

Mary swallowed.

"I never believed it."

She reached into the pocket of her apron.

"I've kept something."

She unfolded a yellowed envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A beautiful brunette stood beside Dylan.

She looked happy.

Hopeful.

Just like I had looked twelve hours earlier.

On the back someone had written:

If you're seeing this...run.

My heart pounded.

"Who wrote this?"

Mary whispered,

"She did."

Before I could ask another question—

Voices echoed downstairs.

Male voices.

Several of them.

Car doors slammed outside.

Mrs. Sterling hurried through the hallway wearing a silk robe.

"Dylan!"

"They're early!"

My instincts sharpened.

Early for what?

Dylan rushed downstairs buttoning his shirt.

"The files are ready?"

His mother answered,

"They'd better be."

I quietly stepped onto the upstairs landing.

Below me, four men in expensive suits entered carrying locked briefcases.

One greeted Mrs. Sterling.

"Morning."

She forced a smile.

"Everything is prepared."

No introductions.

No pleasantries.

Just business.

One briefcase opened.

Stacks of financial records appeared.

Property deeds.

Wire transfers.

Bank statements.

One document slid partly free.

Across the top I read four words.

Federal Grand Jury.

Every instinct I possessed screamed.

Something enormous was happening.

I quietly pulled out my phone.

No sound.

No flash.

One picture.

Then another.

Then a short video.

Every page.

Every face.

Every signature I could capture from above.

Suddenly—

"Claire?"

Dylan's voice exploded through the foyer.

I looked down.

He was staring directly at me.

His eyes moved from my face...

...to the phone in my hand.

Everything stopped.

For one terrifying second, no one breathed.

Then Dylan shouted,

"GET HER PHONE!"

Two security guards sprinted toward the staircase.

I turned and ran.

Barefoot.

Wedding dress gathered in one hand.

Phone clutched in the other.

Behind me, heavy footsteps thundered through the mansion.

The chase had begun.

And somewhere deep inside me, one realization became crystal clear.

May you like

I wasn't running to escape anymore.

I was running to make sure the truth survived.
