CHAPTER 6: THE NIGHT HIS MASK FELL

CHAPTER 6: THE NIGHT HIS MASK FELL

Friday arrived with perfect sunshine.

Grant returned home carrying balloons for Sadie.

He looked like the picture of a devoted husband.

The neighbors waved.

Children rode bicycles down Maple Ridge Drive.

Everything appeared normal.

Exactly how Grant liked it.

At six-thirty that evening, Evelyn hosted her monthly HOA gathering.

Half the neighborhood attended.

Grant insisted we go.

"It'll look good," he said.

I smiled politely.

"I wouldn't miss it."

Dad parked his truck two streets away.

Frank waited inside with copies of every recording.

Hannah sat in another vehicle, ready.

Everyone had one job.

Mine...

Was simply to let Grant talk.

The clubhouse buzzed with conversation.

Grant worked the room effortlessly.

"Nora's been doing much better."

He smiled sympathetically.

"We've had a rough year."

People nodded.

Poor Grant.

Such a patient husband.

Then Evelyn clinked her glass.

"I'd like to thank my wonderful son for everything he does for his family."

Applause filled the room.

Grant looked almost humble.

Almost.

Then he noticed Dad walking through the entrance.

The applause faded.

Dean Bennett wasn't smiling.

Neither was Frank.

Nor Hannah.

Grant's confidence flickered for the first time.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

Dad answered calmly.

"Returning something."

He placed a thick blue folder on the refreshment table.

Across the front were printed four words.

YOUR CUSTODY EVIDENCE.

Grant's face drained of color.

"You went through my files?"

"No."

Dad replied evenly.

"You invited us."

Grant glanced around the room.

"What does that mean?"

Frank connected a small speaker to his phone.

A single audio file began playing.

Grant's own voice echoed through the silent clubhouse.

"Nobody believes crazy women."

The room froze.

Another sentence followed.

"She'll either disappear... or disappear into the system."

Someone gasped.

Evelyn stood abruptly.

"Turn that off!"

Frank didn't.

Instead he played another recording.

Grant describing forged documents.

Another.

Discussing fake evidence.

Another.

Planning custody before any separation had happened.

Neighbors stared at Grant as if they were seeing a stranger.

Because they were.

The mask that had taken years to build...

Cracked in less than three minutes.

Grant lunged toward the speaker.

Dad stepped between them.

"You touch one person in this room..."

His voice was calm enough to chill the air.

"...and you'll make tonight even easier for the police."

Grant looked around desperately.

No one defended him.

Not the HOA board.

Not the families he'd charmed for years.

Not even Evelyn.

She simply whispered,

"Grant..."

As flashing blue and red lights washed across the clubhouse windows.

Someone had already called 911.

Grant turned toward the back exit.

But two uniformed officers were already standing there.

One of them looked at the folder in Frank's hands.

The other looked at me.

Then at Sadie sleeping peacefully in my father's arms.

The older officer spoke only one sentence.

"Mr. Mercer..."

May you like

He reached for his handcuffs.

"I think it's time you answered a few questions."
