CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN VICTORIA COULDN'T DESTROY

CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN VICTORIA COULDN'T DESTROY
The smell of gasoline grew stronger with every passing second.
Someone was pouring it around the cabin.
Emma buried her face against my chest.
"Grandma... I'm scared."
"So am I," I admitted, kissing the top of her head. "But we're getting out of here."
Outside, the countdown continued.
"...Thirty-eight..."
"...Thirty-seven..."
David looked at me with a calmness I hadn't seen in months.
"They're expecting us to panic."
He pointed toward the stone fireplace.
"When this cabin was built, every ranger station had an emergency escape tunnel."
"What?"
"My father showed it to me when I was a kid."
Together we shoved the heavy fireplace aside.
Behind it was a rusted iron hatch.
It took everything we had to pry it open.
A narrow tunnel disappeared into darkness.
Just as we climbed inside—
A deafening explosion shook the cabin.
Flames swallowed the walls above us.
Victoria had not waited for the countdown to finish.
She never intended to.
The tunnel stretched for nearly two hundred yards before opening near the abandoned lakeshore.
Cold dawn light had begun to color the sky.
For the first time in two days, we were outside the circle of armed men.
David handed me the envelope.
"Open it now."
Inside was a single business card.
One name.
Jonathan Hale.
On the back, handwritten in David's trembling script, were six words:
"He built everything Victoria stole."
"I don't understand."
David swallowed.
"Victoria didn't create the medical company."
"Jonathan did."
"He was her business partner... until he discovered the experiments."
"What happened?"
"She framed him for financial crimes."
"Everyone thinks he disappeared."
"But he didn't."
"He's been hiding."
"Waiting."
Emma tugged my sleeve.
"I know him."
David and I stared at her.
"You... know him?"
She nodded.
"The nice grandpa with cookies."
Neither of us had any idea what she meant.
Then a black pickup truck rolled slowly onto the dirt road.
An older man stepped out.
Silver hair.
Weathered face.
Kind eyes.
He looked directly at Emma.
"Hello, little butterfly."
Emma smiled for the first time since waking in the coffin.
"You came."
The man looked at us.
"My name is Jonathan Hale."
"I've been trying to find this child for eighteen months."
Two hours later we were inside a secure federal building.
The memory card was inserted into a protected computer.
The room fell silent.
Video after video filled the screen.
Secret laboratory footage.
Forged death certificates.
Bribed officials.
Children listed as "deceased" while secretly transferred into illegal research facilities.
Doctors signing false medical reports.
Executives celebrating billion-dollar contracts.
Then came the final recording.
Emma's mother.
Alive.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...they've probably killed me."
David collapsed into his chair.
His wife's recorded voice continued.
"Victoria believes she'll erase every witness."
"So I copied everything."
She smiled sadly.
"Emma..."
"If you survived..."
"I need you to be brave."
"I love you more than anything."
The room was filled with quiet sobs.
There was no denying the truth anymore.
May you like
Everything had been recorded.
Everything.
