CHAPTER 3 — THE EMPIRE SHE MOCKED WAS BUILT WITH THE NAME SHE TRIED TO ERASE

CHAPTER 3 — THE EMPIRE SHE MOCKED WAS BUILT WITH THE NAME SHE TRIED TO ERASE

Natalie stood frozen in the middle of the marble patio, water dripping from her ruined designer dress. The investors who had spent the afternoon laughing at her jokes no longer acknowledged her existence. Their attention had shifted entirely to the platinum folder in my hands.

The elegant chairwoman waited patiently.

"So, Dr. Hayes?"

I looked at Liam.

He gave the smallest nod.

"The decision has always been yours."

I accepted the folder.

"I'll hear the board's proposal."

The chairwoman smiled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Applause erupted across the estate.

Not polite applause.

Respectful applause.

The kind reserved for someone whose work had changed lives.

Natalie's nails dug into her palms.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You can't just steal my event!"

One of the Vanguard partners finally faced her.

"Miss Natalie..."

"This stopped being your event the moment we realized who your stepsister is."

He glanced toward me.

"We came seeking the future."

"It appears the future was standing beside your swimming pool all afternoon."

Richard, my stepfather, refused to accept reality.

"This has to be some kind of misunderstanding."

He marched toward me, forcing an awkward smile.

"Audrey..."

"You should have told us."

I met his eyes.

"When?"

"When you threw my acceptance letter into the fireplace?"

His smile vanished.

Several guests exchanged confused looks.

Richard swallowed.

"That was years ago..."

"You misunderstood."

I laughed once.

Quietly.

"I remember every word."

"You said no daughter of yours would waste money becoming an engineer."

"You told me disabled people should learn gratitude instead of ambition."

Silence settled over the crowd.

Richard's face turned gray.

"I didn't mean..."

"You meant every syllable."

The chairwoman frowned.

"Is this true?"

Richard couldn't answer.

Because everyone knew that silence often confessed more than words.

A young venture capitalist approached me cautiously.

"Dr. Hayes..."

"Would you mind telling everyone how Project Phoenix actually began?"

I looked toward the shattered glass pool house.

"It began there."

Everyone looked confused.

"No."

I corrected myself.

"It began in another locked room."

Twenty years earlier.

After losing my leg at thirteen.

Insurance refused to cover advanced prosthetics.

Doctors offered sympathy.

Companies offered outdated technology.

People offered pity.

I wanted none of it.

So I began building my own future.

"I spent nights taking apart broken electronics from junkyards."

"I learned robotics from discarded textbooks."

"I programmed with secondhand computers that overheated every twenty minutes."

Someone whispered,

"By yourself?"

"No."

I smiled.

"There was one person who believed in me."

Everyone turned toward Liam.

He shook his head.

"It wasn't me."

The crowd looked puzzled.

An elderly woman slowly stepped through the gathering.

She wore simple clothes.

No jewelry.

No designer handbag.

Natalie frowned.

"Who invited the cleaning lady?"

The woman ignored her.

She stopped before me.

"My brilliant girl."

Without hesitation, I embraced her.

Tears filled my eyes.

"Professor Evelyn."

Gasps spread through the investors.

"The Evelyn Brooks?"

"The founder of NeuroMotion Labs?"

Natalie looked confused.

Professor Brooks smiled.

"When every university rejected Audrey because of her disability..."

"I gave her a laboratory key."

"When every investor laughed..."

"I introduced her to people who understood vision."

She gently touched my mechanical leg.

"I simply opened the door."

"You walked through it."

The applause this time lasted nearly a full minute.

Natalie could barely breathe.

Unable to bear another second, she grabbed a champagne bottle and smashed it against a marble column.

"STOP IT!"

"You all keep acting like she's some genius!"

"She's still a cripple!"

Every conversation ceased.

The word echoed across the mansion.

Cripple.

For years it had been her favorite weapon.

She expected it to wound me again.

Instead...

I stepped closer.

The gold-titanium blade clicked softly against the stone.

"I lost a leg."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"You lost your humanity."

No one spoke.

Because everyone knew which loss was permanent.

Just then, Liam's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression hardened.

"What happened?"

I asked.

He showed me the message.

A single sentence.

URGENT. PHOENIX MAIN SERVERS ARE UNDER CYBERATTACK.

The chairwoman's face turned white.

"Our global launch..."

"It's tonight."

"If the servers fall..."

"We lose billions."

Liam looked at me.

"The attack started exactly fourteen minutes ago."

Professor Brooks frowned.

"They knew you'd be distracted."

I closed the folder.

"This wasn't random."

Someone wanted Project Phoenix destroyed.

And suddenly...

Every eye in the garden slowly shifted toward Natalie.

She looked genuinely terrified.

"I didn't do anything!"

May you like

But nobody had accused her.

Yet.
