CHAPTER 4: The Benefactor Nobody Expected

CHAPTER 4: The Benefactor Nobody Expected
The mystery lasted less than twenty-four hours.
At nine the next morning, my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed the name of Mom's oncologist.
"Rachel," Dr. Patel said gently, "your mother asked me to contact you."
"Is she all right?"
"Physically, yes."
He paused.
"But there's something you deserve to know."
My stomach tightened.
"What is it?"
"The person who paid for her treatments requested complete anonymity."
"I already know that."
"I believe you should know anyway."
He lowered his voice.
"It wasn't a family member."
My heart skipped.
"It was one of Ava's doctors."
I froze.
"What?"
"Dr. Emily Chen."
The pediatric hematologist who had treated Ava since her diagnosis.
"The same doctor treating my daughter?"
"Yes."
I couldn't speak.
Dr. Patel continued.
"She said your family has already sacrificed enough."
Tears blurred my vision.
"She also asked me to tell you something."
"What?"
"'Please stop carrying everyone else's pain while your own child is fighting for her life.'"
The line went silent.
I sat there, unable to breathe.
A woman who wasn't related to me...
Who had known me only through hospital visits...
Had shown more compassion than my own family.
That afternoon, I drove to the children's hospital.
Dr. Chen met me in her office.
She smiled warmly.
"I figured you'd find out."
"You paid for my mother's treatment?"
She nodded.
"Temporarily."
"Why?"
She folded her hands.
"Because I've watched you."
I frowned.
"You've spent every infusion comforting other parents."
"You bring snacks for the nurses."
"You organize toy drives."
"You've never once complained."
I looked down.
"You've also delayed paying for your own roof repairs."
I stared at her in shock.
"How did you know that?"
She smiled sadly.
"Ava told me rain comes through the ceiling into her bedroom."
I covered my face.
Children noticed everything.
"I can't accept your money," I whispered.
"You won't."
She slid a folder across the desk.
Inside was paperwork from a charitable foundation.
"Several donors contribute anonymously."
"My payment came from that fund."
"So..."
"You don't owe me anything."
She smiled.
"You've already earned it."
Before I could answer, a nurse knocked urgently on the door.
"Dr. Chen..."
"What is it?"
"The board chairman is here."
She sighed.
"I'll be right there."
The nurse hesitated.
"He's asking for Rachel Carter too."
I frowned.
"For me?"
"Yes."
"He says he recognized your name."
Minutes later, I stepped into the conference room.
An elderly man in an immaculate navy suit stood when I entered.
He stared at me with unmistakable recognition.
Then his eyes fell on Ava, who was holding my hand.
He smiled.
"So..."
he said quietly,
"You're the woman who saved my granddaughter's life five years ago."
I blinked.
"I... think you have the wrong person."
He slowly shook his head.
"No, Mrs. Carter."
"I've been trying to find you for a very long time."
The room fell silent.
May you like
Whatever was about to be revealed...
Would change far more than my family's future.
