CHAPTER 6 — Code Pink

CHAPTER 6 — Code Pink
The operating room doors had barely opened when every alarm in the maternity wing erupted.
A loud voice echoed through the speakers.
"Code Pink. Code Pink. Secure all infant units immediately."
Every electronic door locked automatically.
Magnetic locks slammed shut throughout the floor.
The cheerful atmosphere disappeared in an instant.
Doctors stopped talking.
Nurses moved with military precision.
One nurse pulled the blinds closed.
Another covered the small window in the operating room door.
I looked at Owen.
"What does this mean?"
He tried to smile.
"It means they're protecting our daughter."
But his hand was shaking.
Downstairs...
Hospital security reviewed the surveillance cameras.
Lydia hadn't simply run.
She had planned every move.
While security officers questioned my mother at the reception desk, Lydia quietly slipped into a nearby family restroom.
She emerged thirty seconds later...
Wearing stolen blue hospital scrubs.
A surgical mask.
A disposable hair cap.
From a distance, she looked exactly like an employee.
She walked confidently through a staff-only corridor.
No hesitation.
No panic.
Like she'd rehearsed it.
One volunteer even held a door open for her.
"Busy morning?" he joked.
Lydia smiled.
"You have no idea."
Back upstairs, the anesthesiologist leaned over me.
"You'll feel pressure, but no pain."
I nodded, though I wasn't listening.
Every instinct screamed that Lydia was getting closer.
Then—
The operating room phone rang.
A circulating nurse answered.
Her face immediately changed.
"What?"
Silence.
Then—
"She's on this floor."
My heart nearly stopped.
Outside the operating suite, three armed hospital security officers took positions.
The detective arrived moments later with two uniformed police officers.
He spoke quickly.
"No one enters."
"No exceptions."
One nurse asked,
"What if it's another doctor?"
"Verify every ID."
"What if they refuse?"
"Call me."
The detective turned toward Owen.
"If anyone asks you to leave your wife..."
"Don't."
Five minutes later...
A woman in blue scrubs pushed a supply cart toward the operating room.
She wore a mask.
An ID badge.
Gloves.
Everything looked normal.
Until the charge nurse glanced at the badge.
The photo didn't match.
"Excuse me."
The woman kept walking.
"Ma'am."
Still walking.
The nurse stepped in front of the cart.
"I need to see your identification."
Slowly...
The woman raised her eyes.
It was Lydia.
She smiled beneath the mask.
"I forgot it downstairs."
The nurse reached for the emergency alarm clipped to her uniform.
Lydia shoved the supply cart forward with all her strength.
Metal instruments exploded across the hallway.
Doctors jumped aside.
The detective shouted,
"Stop her!"
Lydia sprinted toward the operating room doors.
"I'M HER MOTHER!"
she screamed.
"SHE'S MY BABY!"
She slammed into the locked operating-room entrance just as security tackled her to the floor.
She kicked.
Bit.
Scratched.
Screamed so loudly the sound echoed through the surgical wing.
"YOU STOLE MY DAUGHTER!"
"I CARRIED HER!"
"I'M HER MOTHER!"
Two officers struggled to hold her down.
It took four people to restrain her.
Even then, she kept twisting toward the operating-room doors.
"I just want to hold my baby!"
Inside the operating room, tears streamed down my face.
Not from fear.
From heartbreak.
Because somewhere inside that broken mind...
My sister truly believed every word she was saying.
Then, over the chaos outside...
A tiny cry filled the room.
Strong.
Loud.
Perfect.
My daughter had arrived.
The doctor smiled behind her mask.
"Congratulations."
"It's a healthy baby girl."
For one beautiful moment...
The screaming outside disappeared.
Nothing else mattered except the tiny life they placed against my cheek.
Then the detective stepped quietly into the room.
His expression was solemn.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"Lydia has been arrested."
I closed my eyes, holding Juniper close.
I wanted to feel relief.
Instead, a terrible feeling settled over me.
Because as the officers searched Lydia's abandoned bag...
They had found something that proved this had never been an impulsive act.
Inside were a newborn birth certificate application with Lydia listed as the mother...
A pacifier...
A baby bottle...
And a one-way plane ticket.
May you like
She hadn't come to visit my daughter.
She had come to take her home.
