Chapter 2: The FBI Warrant 😱🚨

Chapter 2: The FBI Warrant 😱🚨

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap.

"Your sister is listed as a cooperating witness."

My father sank onto the couch.

My mother grabbed the edge of a chair for support.

And Brielle?

Brielle looked like she might collapse.

The front door opened again.

This time three federal agents entered.

Dark suits.

Serious expressions.

Credentials displayed.

The lead agent stepped forward.

"Ms. Natalie Whitmore?"

I nodded.

"I'm Special Agent Carter."

He glanced around the room.

"We apologize for the timing."

His tone suggested the opposite.

"This won't take long."

Brielle suddenly stood.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

The panic in her voice was impossible to miss.

"No, no, no. This isn't how this was supposed to happen."

Agent Carter's expression hardened.

"Ms. Whitmore."

Brielle shook her head violently.

"You promised."

The room froze.

Promised?

My stomach tightened.

The agent sighed.

"We promised to protect your cooperation."

He looked around the room.

"We never promised your family wouldn't find out."

Silence.

Dad stared at his youngest daughter.

"Brielle."

His voice cracked.

"What is he talking about?"

For the first time in years, Brielle didn't have a clever answer.

She looked terrified.

Genuinely terrified.

And suddenly I realized something.

The missing money.

The panic.

The fear.

Something bigger was happening.

Much bigger.

Agent Carter turned toward me.

"Ms. Whitmore, your company is a victim in this investigation."

That got my attention.

"A victim?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I crossed my arms.

"Then start explaining."

The agent exchanged a glance with his team.

Then he pulled a folder from his briefcase.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Wire transfers.

Corporate filings.

Enough paper to ruin lives.

He placed one photograph on the coffee table.

The room leaned in.

My blood ran cold.

The man in the picture smiled confidently beside a luxury yacht.

Expensive suit.

Expensive watch.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

I recognized him immediately.

So did everyone else.

"Daniel Mercer."

Dad whispered the name.

The room fell silent.

Daniel Mercer.

Our Chief Financial Officer.

My father's closest business adviser.

A man who had worked with our family for twelve years.

A man Dad trusted completely.

A man who attended every holiday dinner.

Every company retreat.

Every family celebration.

Agent Carter nodded.

"That's right."

He opened another file.

"Over the last four years, Daniel Mercer orchestrated a multi-state fraud scheme."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The agent continued.

"He used shell companies."

"False consulting invoices."

"Fake development projects."

"He diverted more than sixty-two million dollars."

Mom gasped.

Dad looked physically ill.

I felt my pulse hammering.

Sixty-two million.

Not three.

Not five.

Sixty-two.

Then Agent Carter said something nobody expected.

"Your sister discovered it."

The room snapped toward Brielle.

She looked down.

Ashamed.

Crying.

"I didn't mean to."

Her voice trembled.

"It was an accident."

Agent Carter nodded.

"She found discrepancies while reviewing expense reports."

I stared.

Expense reports?

Brielle?

That sounded impossible.

The agent seemed to read my mind.

"Ms. Whitmore had recently been assigned to a financial oversight committee."

Dad blinked.

"I assigned her there."

The room turned toward him.

For the first time that evening, Dad looked embarrassed.

"I thought it would help her learn responsibility."

The irony nearly knocked me over.

The one job he'd given Brielle out of favoritism had accidentally exposed a criminal enterprise.

"I went to Daniel."

Brielle whispered.

The tears kept falling.

"I thought it was a mistake."

Agent Carter's expression darkened.

"It wasn't."

"No."

Brielle shook her head.

"It wasn't."

Her voice broke completely.

"Because after I asked questions..."

The room held its breath.

"...he threatened me."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

My anger disappeared.

Instantly.

I had expected incompetence.

Entitlement.

Maybe even greed.

I had not expected fear.

Real fear.

The kind that leaves scars.

Brielle wiped her eyes.

"He knew where I lived."

My stomach dropped.

"He knew where Mom went every Tuesday."

Mom's face went pale.

"He knew Dad's medical appointments."

Dad looked stunned.

The room felt colder.

Much colder.

Because suddenly we weren't discussing accounting fraud anymore.

We were discussing intimidation.

Power.

Control.

Danger.

"I went to the FBI."

Brielle whispered.

The confession echoed through the room.

"I didn't know what else to do."

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody judged.

For once.

The spoiled younger sister was gone.

The entitled favorite child was gone.

All that remained was a frightened woman who had spent months carrying a secret alone.

Then Agent Carter pulled out one final photograph.

And everything changed.

Again.

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

My breath stopped.

The photo showed Daniel Mercer.

Standing beside someone.

Someone familiar.

Someone impossible.

Dad stood up so quickly his chair tipped over.

"No."

Mom covered her mouth.

Brielle started crying again.

And I...

I felt the room tilt.

Because standing beside Daniel Mercer in the photograph—

smiling—

shaking hands—

was someone we all knew.

Someone we all trusted.

Someone who shouldn't have been involved.

Someone who had been quietly sitting in this room only thirty minutes ago.

My father.

The room exploded.

"Dad?" I whispered.

Agent Carter slowly nodded.

"We believe Daniel Mercer didn't act alone."

My father's face turned white.

"What are you talking about?"

The agent's eyes narrowed.

"That's exactly what we're here to find out."

The room went silent.

Because for the first time that night...

the possibility emerged that the company hadn't nearly been destroyed by incompetence.

It might have been betrayed from the inside.

And the person holding the answers...

might be the man who had slapped me less than an hour ago.

May you like
