CHAPTER 2 — The Footsteps That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2 — The Footsteps That Changed Everything

The clicking of high heels stopped just outside the nursery.

One.

Two.

Three slow taps.

Then the doorknob turned.

Victoria stepped inside wearing the same ivory silk dress she had worn to brunch that afternoon. Her lipstick was flawless. Her hair perfectly arranged. There wasn't a single sign that she had spent the day terrorizing another human being.

For half a second, surprise flickered across her face.

Then she smiled.

"Oh," she said lightly. "You're home early."

I stared at her.

Emily was still tied to the bed.

My twins were still strapped against her chest.

Blood still ran down her wrists.

And my wife...

...was smiling.

"What," I asked quietly, "is this?"

Victoria glanced toward Emily as though noticing the ropes for the first time.

She rolled her eyes.

"For heaven's sake, Daniel."

She sighed dramatically.

"She's exaggerating again."

Emily flinched.

Victoria walked calmly into the room, setting her designer purse onto the changing table.

"I asked her to stay with the babies while I answered a business call. She became hysterical because I wouldn't let her leave work."

She shrugged.

"So I restrained her."

My heart skipped.

"You... restrained her?"

"Obviously."

She crossed her arms.

"She was emotional. Emotional people make poor decisions."

Emily's lips trembled.

"I begged you because my son was dying."

Victoria laughed.

"Your son is always dying."

The words landed like bullets.

I looked at Emily.

Her face crumpled.

"He has leukemia," she whispered.

"I've never lied about it."

Victoria scoffed.

"Convenient disease."

Something inside me snapped.

I marched across the room and grabbed the ropes binding Emily's wrists.

They weren't makeshift restraints.

They were tied with perfect sailor's knots.

Tight.

Deliberate.

Impossible to escape.

Whoever tied them knew exactly what they were doing.

As I cut through the fabric with the pocketknife from my briefcase, Emily cried out.

The cloth had dried into her wounds.

Every movement tore fresh skin away.

My stomach twisted.

The moment her hands were free, she didn't rub her own wrists.

She reached for my twins.

Checking their breathing.

Their fingers.

Their tiny faces.

Only after she knew they were safe did she allow herself to cry.

Victoria noticed.

"See?"

she sneered.

"She's obsessed with them."

Emily hugged the babies tighter.

"They were terrified."

"They needed someone."

Victoria folded her arms.

"No."

She smiled coldly.

"They needed to learn."

I turned slowly toward my wife.

"...Learn what?"

"That love isn't free."

Silence.

The nursery suddenly felt colder.

Victoria stepped closer until she stood only inches from me.

"You spoil everyone, Daniel."

"The staff."

"The children."

"Even strangers."

"People only respect fear."

Emily lowered her eyes.

I had never seen fear look so complete.

It wasn't just fear of losing a job.

It was fear of someone who had survived this before.

Then I noticed something.

A faint yellow bruise beneath Emily's sleeve.

Another near her collarbone.

Older.

Healing.

Not today's injuries.

My voice became dangerously calm.

"How long has this been happening?"

Emily froze.

Victoria answered before she could.

"Oh don't start."

"She bruises easily."

I ignored her.

I looked only at Emily.

"Answer me."

Tears filled her eyes.

She shook her head.

"I can't."

"You can."

"I signed an agreement."

"What agreement?"

Emily swallowed.

"If I ever accused Mrs. Cole of abuse..."

"...she said she'd make sure no hospital in this city would treat my son."

The room stopped breathing.

"What?"

Victoria sighed as though discussing the weather.

"I have connections."

Emily continued.

"She said she would tell everyone I stole jewelry."

"She said she'd send police to my apartment."

"She said social services would take my little boy away if he survived."

Each sentence felt like another knife twisting into my chest.

Victoria looked annoyed.

"Honestly, Emily."

"Must you be so dramatic?"

My hands began shaking.

Not from fear.

From rage.

Then Emily reached into the pocket of her torn uniform.

Her fingers trembled as she pulled out something no larger than a coin.

A tiny black memory card.

"I hid this," she whispered.

Victoria's smile vanished instantly.

"No."

Emily nodded.

"I started recording because no one would believe me."

My pulse thundered.

"What does it contain?"

Emily looked directly at me.

"Everything."

"The slaps."

"The threats."

"What she did to me."

"What she said about my son."

Victoria lunged.

"Give me that!"

She moved faster than I had ever seen.

But I caught her wrist before she reached Emily.

She struggled violently.

"Daniel!"

"Let go!"

Instead...

I squeezed harder.

For the first time since I had known her...

Victoria looked afraid.

Real fear.

Not performance.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

"You recorded me?" she hissed.

Emily nodded through tears.

"I thought if I disappeared..."

"...someone should know why."

The words hit me harder than anything else.

Disappeared.

Not quit.

Not escaped.

Disappeared.

I slowly released Victoria's wrist.

Then I took the memory card from Emily's shaking hand.

It weighed almost nothing.

Yet somehow...

...it felt heavier than my entire marriage.

Victoria's voice became desperate.

"Daniel."

"Don't put that in your computer."

"You don't understand."

"I was disciplining an employee."

"I was protecting our children."

I looked into her eyes.

For the first time...

I saw absolutely nothing familiar staring back.

Only calculation.

Only cruelty.

Only someone who had become a complete stranger.

Without saying a single word, I walked toward the desk in the nursery where my laptop sat charging.

Victoria's breathing quickened.

"No."

I inserted the memory card.

The screen blinked.

One folder appeared.

Its name was simple.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.

My finger hovered over the mouse.

Behind me, Victoria whispered in a voice I had never heard before—

May you like

"If you open that folder..."

"...our lives will never be the same again."
