CHAPTER 4 — THE RECORDING THAT DESTROYED THEM

CHAPTER 4 — THE RECORDING THAT DESTROYED THEM

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

The police officer slowly crouched to Lily's height.

"Can I see that phone?"

She looked at me first.

I nodded once.

She handed it over.

The officer pressed play.

At first...

Only the sound of silverware.

Glasses clinking.

Then my mother's voice filled the dining room.

"Sarah has emotional problems."

Another voice.

Marissa.

"She preferred living in the basement."

Then mine.

"Who changed the locks?"

The heavy sound of the brass padlock striking the table echoed through the speakers.

Silence.

Then my mother's nervous explanation.

"She kept losing her keys."

Another pause.

And then...

Everything.

Every lie.

Every contradiction.

Every excuse.

Recorded without interruption.

The officer stopped the playback.

He looked directly at my mother.

"Ma'am..."

"Did you prevent your daughter-in-law and grandchildren from accessing the main living area of this residence?"

"No!"

"You just heard the recording."

"That was taken out of context."

He glanced toward the basement staircase.

"Is there another kitchen downstairs?"

"No."

"Bathroom?"

"A utility sink."

"Heating?"

"A space heater."

The younger officer's expression hardened.

"You left children down there?"

My mother pointed at Sarah.

"She wanted to stay!"

Sarah finally spoke.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"You changed every lock in the house."

"I have text messages."

She held out her phone.

"I begged for food."

"I begged to use the washing machine."

"I begged to let Noah sleep upstairs because his cough kept getting worse."

The officers spent several minutes reading.

One by one...

Their expressions changed.

Professional.

Then concerned.

Then angry.

The lead officer looked at me.

"Sir..."

"Who legally owns this property?"

"I do."

"Whose names are on the deed?"

"My wife and I."

He turned back to my mother.

"So you had no ownership interest in this home?"

My mother said nothing.

Marissa exploded.

"This is ridiculous!"

"We sacrificed everything for this family!"

The officer faced her calmly.

"Then you won't mind explaining the transfers."

"What transfers?"

I opened the folder my accountant had prepared.

"Five years."

"Three hundred and twelve bank statements."

"Luxury vacations."

"Jewelry."

"Vehicles."

"Designer stores."

"All purchased from the account where my offshore salary was deposited."

The room went deathly quiet.

Mrs. Donnelly covered her mouth.

One of the businessmen whispered,

"My God..."

The lead officer closed the folder.

Then he spoke words my mother had clearly never imagined hearing.

"Ma'am..."

"I'm placing this residence under investigation."

"You and your daughter are not to remove any financial records."

"If evidence is destroyed..."

He paused.

"...additional criminal charges may apply."

My mother's knees nearly gave out.

For the first time in her life...

No one believed her.

And standing in the center of the room...

Wrapped in a faded blanket that should never have been his bed...

My little son Noah quietly asked the question that broke every heart present.

"Daddy..."

May you like

He looked around the beautiful dining room.

"...are we allowed to live upstairs now?"
