CHAPTER 6 – The Detective Played One Recording

CHAPTER 6 – The Detective Played One Recording

By Monday morning, the investigation had spread far beyond the hospital.

Two detectives returned with a laptop.

A victim advocate accompanied them.

Hospital legal counsel stood quietly in the corner.

Detective Alvarez spoke first.

"Mrs. Lawson, we'd like your permission to play surveillance audio."

I nodded.

"If I need to hear it... play it."

He connected the laptop to a portable speaker.

"This recording comes from the hallway outside the pediatric ICU."

"The timestamp is approximately four minutes before your parents entered Emma's room."

The recording began.

At first, there was only the squeak of shoes and distant announcements over the hospital intercom.

Then voices.

Charlotte's.

"I still think she's going to refuse."

My mother's voice answered immediately.

"She won't."

"What if she does?"

A pause.

Then—

"Then she'll lose the only family she has."

Charlotte sounded uncertain.

"Mom... maybe this isn't the right time."

"There's never a right time with Rebecca."

Another pause.

Then my father's voice.

"We've already paid deposits for Madison's party."

"We're not wasting that money because of another one of Rebecca's dramas."

My heart pounded so loudly I barely heard the next sentence.

Then...

My mother's voice came through with terrifying clarity.

"If that little girl doesn't make it..."

She laughed.

Actually laughed.

"...Rebecca won't have any excuses left."

Nobody in the room moved.

The recording continued.

Charlotte whispered,

"Don't say that."

"I didn't mean anything."

Mom replied casually.

"Oh, stop acting shocked."

"Children die."

"It's unfortunate."

"But life goes on."

Detective Alvarez stopped the audio.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the recording itself.

Finally, he spoke.

"We've authenticated the file."

"It's been enhanced by our forensic audio lab."

"There is no evidence of editing."

Marcus buried his face in his hands.

Josh stared at the floor.

I couldn't even cry anymore.

Some grief eventually burns itself into something colder.

The detective folded his notebook.

"There's one more development."

I looked up.

"The district attorney has approved additional charges."

"What charges?"

"Based on witness testimony, surveillance evidence, and the video your brother-in-law recorded..."

He paused.

"...your mother is now facing charges that include interference with critical medical treatment, child endangerment, and attempted obstruction of a medical emergency."

"And my father?"

"He is being investigated as an accomplice."

"What about Charlotte?"

The detective sighed.

"That depends."

"On what?"

He met my eyes.

"Whether she continues lying."

Before I could answer, the ICU door opened.

Emma's neurologist entered with a smile I hadn't seen before.

"I've got news."

Every person in the room stood.

He looked directly at Marcus and me.

"Emma opened her eyes."

For a heartbeat, nothing else mattered.

Not the investigation.

Not the inheritance.

Not the recordings.

Not the people who had spent my entire life trying to convince me I was worth less.

I ran into my daughter's room.

Her eyelids fluttered weakly.

Confused blue eyes searched the room until they found me.

Her tiny lips moved.

The words were barely audible.

"Mommy..."

I took her hand.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

A tear rolled down Emma's cheek.

May you like

Then she whispered five words that froze every adult standing beside her bed.

"Grandma made me scared."
