CHAPTER 6: The Truth My Father Couldn't Hide

CHAPTER 6: The Truth My Father Couldn't Hide

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Finally I asked the question that had lived inside me since childhood.

"Did you ever love me?"

Dad closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was immediate.

"Every day."

"Then why didn't I know it?"

His shoulders slumped.

"Because loving you quietly wasn't enough."

"No," I whispered.

"It wasn't."

He stared across the park.

"I failed you."

The words were so simple that they almost sounded meaningless.

But they were the first honest words I'd ever heard from him.

"I thought keeping the peace was protecting everyone."

"It wasn't."

"I know."

"I kept telling myself your mother would change."

"She never did."

"I know."

"I thought if I stayed out of it..."

"...things would settle down."

"They didn't."

"I know."

Every sentence came too late.

But for once...

He wasn't making excuses.

Then he reached into his jacket pocket.

"I brought something."

He handed me an old spiral notebook.

"I found it while cleaning the attic."

Inside were dozens of pages in my mother's handwriting.

Household budgets.

Bills.

Shopping lists.

Then...

A page with my name written across the top.

Not lovingly.

Like an account.

Underneath were columns.

Emma

College fund...used.

Savings...borrowed.

Emergency loan.

Mortgage help.

Insurance.

Utilities.

Each amount was carefully recorded.

Beside nearly every entry were the words:

Paid by Emma.

My stomach turned.

This wasn't gratitude.

It was bookkeeping.

I kept turning pages.

Near the back, another note stopped me cold.

"Never ask Rita. She gets overwhelmed."

Then another line.

"Emma feels guilty easier."

I stared at the sentence until the letters blurred.

Dad quietly said, "I never saw that notebook before yesterday."

I believed him.

But belief didn't erase decades.

"Why are you showing me this now?"

His answer came immediately.

"Because your mother has a plan."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"What plan?"

He hesitated.

Then looked me directly in the eyes.

"She isn't just angry about the money."

"Then what?"

"Rita."

"What about her?"

Dad swallowed hard.

"She's deeper in debt than anyone told you."

"How deep?"

"Over two hundred thousand dollars."

I blinked.

"What?"

"Credit cards."

"Personal loans."

"Business loans."

"A second mortgage."

The number barely felt real.

"Mom has been covering it up."

"With my money."

He nodded.

"And now..."

"...there's no money left."

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

"What are they going to do?"

Dad's eyes filled with shame.

He answered in barely a whisper.

"They've decided..."

"...that since you're about to inherit Grandma's lake house..."

"...they're going to convince you to sign it over to Rita."

I felt my daughter's tiny kick beneath my ribs.

Protect your child.

My grandmother's final words echoed in my mind.

One day they will ask you for something bigger than money.

She had known.

May you like

Years before any of this happened...

She had known exactly what was coming.
