Chapter 6 – The Choice That Exposed Everything

Chapter 6 – The Choice That Exposed Everything

No one reached for the pen.

Not immediately.

My mother stared at it as though signing the amendment would somehow erase every decision she'd made.

My father finally picked it up.

His hand trembled.

"I'm signing."

Melissa grabbed his wrist.

"Dad, don't."

"If you sign that, he's controlling your life."

My father slowly pulled his hand away.

"No."

"He already could."

"I just never realized how much mercy he'd been showing us."

He signed.

One shaky signature.

Then another.

He passed the pen to my mother.

She looked at me with swollen eyes.

"Will this make Tyler and Emma forgive me?"

I answered honestly.

"No."

"Forgiveness isn't something adults get to demand from children."

"It's something we earn."

Tears rolled silently down her face as she signed.

Melissa stared at both of them in disbelief.

"You can't be serious."

"You actually think he's the victim?"

Laura stepped forward for the first time.

"No."

"The victims are sitting in our car wondering why their grandmother didn't want them."

Melissa scoffed.

"Oh, they'll get over it."

The room froze.

Even Daniel looked up.

Laura's expression hardened.

"My children will get over it."

"But they'll never forget who made them feel unwanted."

Those words struck harder than any scream.

Melissa folded her arms.

"Fine."

"If everyone wants to worship Saint Jack, go ahead."

"But don't expect me to apologize."

I looked at Daniel.

He understood immediately.

Without saying a word, he opened one final envelope.

"This concerns the guest occupancy of the basement apartment."

Melissa frowned.

"What about it?"

Daniel slid the document across the table.

"Your family has occupied that space under a temporary license."

"That license expires today."

Her confidence disappeared.

"What?"

"Under the trust agreement, Mr. Reynolds has chosen not to renew it."

Brian, who had remained silent through the entire confrontation, finally spoke.

"You mean... we have to move?"

Daniel nodded.

"You'll have thirty days."

Melissa's face turned bright red.

"You can't do this!"

I looked at her calmly.

"I can."

"But more importantly..."

"I have to."

She pointed toward my parents.

"They need us here."

My father slowly shook his head.

"No."

"We needed you to become responsible years ago."

The words stunned everyone.

Especially Melissa.

"Dad..."

"No."

"I protected you your whole life."

"I made your brother carry burdens that belonged to you."

He looked at me.

"I'm so sorry."

It was the first apology I'd ever heard from him.

A real one.

Not wrapped in excuses.

Not followed by blame.

Just three simple words.

Laura quietly walked outside and returned with Tyler and Emma.

The children hesitated in the doorway.

My mother stood.

She took one cautious step toward them.

Then another.

She knelt until she was eye level with Emma.

"I don't deserve your card."

Emma looked down at the folded pink paper still clutched in her hands.

For several long seconds, no one breathed.

Finally, she held it out.

"You can have it..."

"...but only if you really want me next time."

My mother's sob echoed through the entire house.

And for the first time in years...

May you like

She couldn't answer with words.

Because the truth hurt too much.
