Chapter 6: The Trial Begins Before the Courtroom

Chapter 6: The Trial Begins Before the Courtroom
News of the criminal charges spread across the country within hours.
Former employees came forward.
Business partners shared emails.
Women who had once worked closely with Matthew contacted investigators.
Patterns emerged.
Manipulation.
Threats.
Intimidation.
Not all had suffered physical violence.
But many described the same cold arrogance.
Matthew believed rules existed for everyone else.
His attorneys requested a private settlement meeting.
Arthur agreed.
Not to negotiate.
To listen.
The meeting took place in a downtown law office.
Matthew arrived wearing a perfectly tailored suit, as though appearances could erase reality.
When he entered the conference room, he saw me sitting beside my father.
For a brief moment, something almost like relief crossed his face.
"Clare."
I didn't answer.
He sat down.
"I know you're angry."
Silence.
"I made mistakes."
Silence.
"I've already lost everything."
Arthur folded his hands.
"No."
Matthew frowned.
"What?"
"You've lost a company."
Arthur's voice was calm.
"You haven't yet faced what you took from my daughter."
Matthew turned toward me.
"I never stopped loving you."
For years, those words would have broken me.
Now...
They sounded empty.
I met his eyes for the first time since the hospital.
"Love doesn't make someone afraid to go home."
The room became still.
Matthew looked away first.
His attorney cleared his throat.
"My client is prepared to offer Mrs. Hayes one hundred million dollars."
Arthur didn't even glance at the paperwork.
"No."
"Two hundred million."
"No."
Matthew leaned forward.
"What do you want?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"Nothing."
Matthew blinked.
"What?"
"My daughter isn't for sale."
I stood.
Neither man tried to stop me.
Before leaving, I looked back one last time.
"I spent years believing you held all the power."
Matthew opened his mouth.
I continued before he could speak.
"The truth is..."
"You only had the power I gave you."
"And today..."
"I take it back."
I walked out without looking behind me.
A week later, the first court hearing drew national attention.
Reporters filled every available seat.
Television cameras lined the courthouse steps.
Matthew entered surrounded by lawyers.
I arrived with my father and Henderson.
As we walked through the courthouse doors, dozens of cameras flashed.
Someone shouted,
"Mrs. Sterling, are you afraid?"
I paused.
Months ago, I would have lowered my head.
Instead, I answered clearly enough for every microphone to hear.
"I was."
"But fear only wins while you stay silent."
Then I continued inside.
Arthur slowed beside me.
Without looking away from the courtroom doors, he quietly said,
"Your mother would be proud."
May you like
For the first time in years...
I believed him.
