CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN IN THE SNOW

CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN IN THE SNOW

Silence crashed over the estate harder than the winter wind.

No one inside the house moved.

Grant's hand froze on the deadbolt.

Evelyn's crystal glass slipped from her fingers and shattered across the hardwood floor.

"What... what did she say?" Caleb whispered, lowering the phone that had been recording for fun only seconds before.

Outside, the woman stood perfectly still as snow gathered on the shoulders of her charcoal cashmere coat. Behind her, twelve security officers spread across the driveway with military precision, their black umbrellas opening simultaneously despite the storm.

The woman never looked at them.

Her eyes remained fixed on the young woman lying in the snow.

"My daughter," she repeated.

Grant laughed.

At first.

It came out sharp and nervous.

"This has to be some joke."

He unlocked the front door and stepped onto the porch, forcing confidence into his voice.

"I don't know who you think you are, but she's my wife."

The woman finally turned toward him.

Her expression never changed.

"No."

One word.

Nothing louder.

Nothing dramatic.

Yet every person standing on the porch felt something inside them tighten.

"You possessed a marriage certificate."

She took another step.

"You never possessed her."

Grant frowned.

"Listen, lady—"

A security guard appeared beside him so quickly he hadn't seen him move.

"One more threatening step toward Ms. Rowan," the guard said calmly, "and you'll discover how quickly assault charges become the least of your concerns."

Grant instinctively stepped backward.

Inside the house, Evelyn rushed forward wearing the polished smile she reserved for wealthy investors.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

She extended a trembling hand.

"I'm Evelyn Whitmore. We own Whitmore Resorts. Perhaps we can discuss—"

The woman ignored the hand completely.

Instead, she removed her gloves.

Knelt in the snow.

And wrapped her own coat around the shivering young woman.

"You've lost too much blood."

The younger woman managed a weak smile.

"I'm all right."

"No."

The older woman's voice softened for the first time.

"You've spent two years pretending to be."

Tears filled the younger woman's eyes.

"I wanted proof."

"You have it?"

A small nod.

"The second phone."

She reached inside her torn coat and handed over the hidden device.

The woman accepted it with remarkable care, as though it were more valuable than diamonds.

She pressed play.

Grant's drunken voice echoed through the freezing night.

"Sign the transfer papers tomorrow..."

"I won't sign."

"Then freeze."

Then came the shove.

The impact.

The laughter.

Evelyn's voice.

"You came into this family with nothing."

The recording continued uninterrupted.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every second.

When it ended, the woman quietly locked the screen.

Then handed the phone to one of her attorneys.

"Chain of custody begins now."

The attorney immediately placed the device into an evidence bag.

Grant swallowed.

"Look, couples fight."

No one answered him.

"It was an argument."

Still silence.

"She wasn't actually going to freeze."

The woman looked at him for exactly three seconds.

"They left her outside."

She glanced toward the security cameras mounted beneath the roof.

"They watched."

Then toward Caleb.

"They filmed."

Finally toward Evelyn.

"They celebrated."

Each sentence landed like a judge announcing a verdict.

Grant felt sweat forming beneath his collar despite the freezing temperature.

"You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly."

The woman stood.

"My name is Victoria Rowan."

The color drained from Evelyn's face.

Impossible.

No.

It couldn't be.

Victoria Rowan.

Founder of the Rowan Global Foundation.

Major shareholder in Halden International.

One of the most influential women in international finance.

The woman whose interviews appeared on magazine covers.

The billionaire governments consulted during economic crises.

The woman no one ever managed to sue.

The woman no one defeated.

Grant looked from Victoria...

...to his wife...

...then back again.

His voice cracked.

"Rowan?"

Victoria nodded once.

"My legal daughter."

Caleb's phone slipped from his frozen fingers.

It hit the porch with a dull crack.

Grant turned toward his wife.

"No."

His breathing became uneven.

"No, your name is Emma Carter."

For the first time all night...

She smiled.

A sad smile.

"The only fake thing about me..."

She slowly stood with Victoria supporting her arm.

"...was the name."

She looked directly into her husband's terrified eyes.

"My name is Eleanor Rowan."

The wind seemed to disappear.

Even the snow felt quieter.

Grant remembered dozens of conversations.

Every time she'd corrected his contracts.

Every time she'd predicted market changes.

Every investor who mysteriously returned her calls immediately.

Every banker who addressed her with unusual respect before pretending not to know her.

Pieces that had never fit together suddenly became one horrifying picture.

"Oh my God..."

he whispered.

Victoria didn't let him recover.

"Mr. Whitmore."

He looked up instinctively.

"You attempted to coerce my daughter into signing ownership of Halden Winter Holdings."

Grant forced himself to nod.

"You believed it was a shell company."

Another nod.

Victoria's eyes became almost sympathetic.

"It isn't."

One attorney opened a leather briefcase.

Several thick folders emerged.

Another projected documents onto a portable screen.

Corporate ownership charts.

Debt structures.

Loan agreements.

Mortgage transfers.

Evelyn stared at the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Her knees nearly gave way.

"No..."

Victoria continued.

"Six months ago..."

She pointed to a highlighted line.

"...Halden Winter Holdings legally acquired every distressed loan secured against Whitmore Resorts."

Grant blinked.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

The attorney slid the final document across a portable table.

The amount owed filled the page.

$842,000,000.

Interest continuing daily.

Payment overdue.

Secured by every Whitmore property.

Every hotel.

Every piece of land.

Every asset.

Grant's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Victoria folded her gloves carefully before speaking one final sentence.

"So tell me..."

She looked from Grant...

...to Evelyn...

...to Caleb...

"...how exactly were you planning to steal the company that already owns everything you've ever called yours?"

No one answered.

Because for the first time in their lives...

May you like

The Whitmore family understood what true helplessness felt like.

And Victoria Rowan was only getting started.
