CHAPTER 3 — Richard's Secret

CHAPTER 3 — Richard's Secret

Richard didn't answer.

He simply stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the ultrasound image as though he'd seen it before.

The silence stretched so long that even the frantic activity around Emily's hospital bed seemed to fade into the background.

Dr. Carter stepped closer.

"Mr. Hayes?"

Richard blinked.

"What?"

"I asked if your daughter has been exposed to anything unusual."

His jaw tightened.

"No."

"Any medications?"

"No."

"Chemicals? Radiation? Experimental treatments?"

"No."

Every answer came too quickly.

Too rehearsed.

I knew that tone.

Twenty-three years of marriage had taught me exactly what Richard sounded like when he was lying.

He avoided my eyes.

That alone was enough to make my stomach turn.

Emily remained unconscious while nurses adjusted her IV and monitored her breathing.

The strange bulge beneath her skin had disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared.

But nobody in the room looked relieved.

The doctors exchanged uneasy glances.

Finally, Dr. Reynolds spoke.

"We need an emergency MRI."

Richard immediately shook his head.

"That's unnecessary."

Every head turned toward him.

Dr. Carter frowned.

"I'm sorry?"

"I said it's unnecessary."

His voice had become strangely firm.

"It's probably a rare muscle spasm or some kind of intestinal issue. You're frightening everyone over nothing."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Our daughter just collapsed!"

I nearly shouted.

"The scans show something moving inside her!"

"They're probably mistaken."

"Mistaken?"

My voice cracked.

"Four doctors are standing here telling us they've never seen anything like this!"

Richard folded his arms.

"Doctors make mistakes."

Dr. Reynolds looked at him carefully.

"Mr. Hayes, with respect, refusing further testing could place your daughter's life in danger."

Richard didn't even hesitate.

"I don't consent."

The room fell silent.

I stared at him.

"What did you just say?"

"I said no."

His cold eyes met mine.

"We're not letting them put Emily through unnecessary procedures."

I felt something inside me snap.

"You don't get to make that decision alone."

"Actually," he replied calmly, "as her father, I have every right."

"No."

I stepped between him and Emily's bed.

"As her mother, I do too."

Dr. Carter quietly interrupted.

"Legally, if one parent consents to emergency treatment that's necessary to preserve life, we can proceed."

Richard's expression darkened.

"You'll regret this."

Those words sent a chill through me.

Regret?

What did he mean?

Before anyone could respond, Richard spun around and walked out of the room.

Not angrily.

Not emotionally.

Just... left.

I watched through the glass window as he disappeared down the hallway.

Something wasn't right.

Not just denial.

Fear.

Real fear.

An hour later, Emily was taken for the MRI.

The waiting room felt unbearably quiet.

I wrapped my hands around a paper cup of coffee that had long since gone cold.

Richard never came back.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

I texted him repeatedly.

No response.

Then my own phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice spoke quietly.

"Is this Mrs. Hayes?"

"Yes."

"My name is Angela."

She hesitated.

"I work with your husband."

My heart skipped.

"Is Richard there?"

"No."

Another pause.

"I don't know if I should be calling."

"What is it?"

"I overheard him talking today."

Every muscle in my body tensed.

"He sounded... panicked."

"What did he say?"

Angela lowered her voice even further.

"He kept repeating the same sentence."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What sentence?"

"'She wasn't supposed to survive this long.'"

Everything inside me went numb.

"I'm sorry..."

"I must have heard you wrong."

"I wish you had."

Angela sounded shaken.

"He locked himself inside his office after that."

"Then he took several files from a safe."

"What files?"

"I don't know."

"But before leaving..."

"He burned something in the company incinerator."

My heartbeat thundered.

"Mrs. Hayes..."

"I don't know what's happening."

"But if your daughter is in danger..."

"I don't think it's an accident."

The call ended.

I stared at the blank phone screen.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to think.

What had Richard meant?

She wasn't supposed to survive?

Survive what?

A nurse hurried into the waiting room.

"Mrs. Hayes?"

I stood immediately.

"The MRI is finished."

"Can I see her?"

Dr. Carter appeared behind the nurse.

His face was even paler than before.

"I'm afraid we found something."

He led me into a private consultation room.

The MRI images covered an entire digital screen.

At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.

Then Dr. Reynolds pointed to a shadow deep inside Emily's abdomen.

"This is the mass."

I nodded weakly.

She clicked to the next image.

"And this..."

Another image appeared.

The shadow had moved.

Again.

"But the MRI only took forty minutes," I whispered.

"Exactly."

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Whatever is inside your daughter..."

"It changed position three separate times while she was inside the scanner."

A cold wave of terror swept through me.

Then Dr. Carter quietly added the sentence I will never forget.

"And there's something even more disturbing."

He enlarged one section of the scan.

"What you're seeing here..."

He swallowed.

"...looks almost identical to surgically implanted medical hardware."

I stared at the image.

"I don't understand."

He looked at me gravely.

"It appears that someone may have operated on Emily..."

"...years ago."

My knees nearly gave out.

"But Emily has never had surgery."

Dr. Carter didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment, a hospital security officer burst into the room.

"Doctor!"

"The patient's father just broke into Medical Records."

May you like

"He stole her birth file."

"And he's gone."
