CHAPTER 4: THE CAMERA NO ONE KNEW ABOUT

CHAPTER 4: THE CAMERA NO ONE KNEW ABOUT

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Officer Ortiz slowly walked into the narrow closet.

He measured it with his eyes.

Barely four feet wide.

No windows.

No ventilation.

No toys.

Only darkness.

He turned toward Lily as gently as he could.

"Sweetheart..."

"Did you stay here?"

She nodded.

"When?"

"When I cried."

"How long?"

She looked uncertain.

"Until the house got dark."

Rebecca's face hardened.

"And who put you here?"

Lily didn't answer.

Instead...

She looked at Celeste.

That silence answered everything.

Celeste threw up her hands.

"This is ridiculous!"

"It wasn't punishment."

"It was a calming space."

Rebecca replied evenly,

"A calming space doesn't lock from the outside."

Every head turned.

Officer Ortiz was holding up the brass lock.

It was installed on the exterior of the closet door.

Only someone outside could open it.

Celeste's confidence cracked.

"I... I had it installed because Lily wandered."

"Lily is eight."

"She sleepwalks."

Adrian interrupted.

"No."

His voice was icy.

"She doesn't."

Celeste stared at him.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"How?"

"Because after her mother died, I spent every night sleeping on the floor beside her bed."

The words struck the room like thunder.

"I know every nightmare she ever had."

"I know she clutches a pillow when she's scared."

"I know she whispers to her mother in her sleep."

He stepped closer.

"But she has never sleepwalked."

Rebecca quietly asked James,

"Are there security cameras?"

James hesitated.

"In every hallway."

Celeste answered too quickly.

"They stopped working months ago."

Adrian looked toward the security office.

"No."

"They didn't."

She froze.

"I had them upgraded before my last trip."

Officer Ortiz's eyes narrowed.

"Can we access them?"

Adrian nodded once.

"Follow me."

The security room was hidden behind Adrian's home office.

Six monitors covered an entire wall.

The system automatically stored recordings for one year.

Adrian entered his password.

The screens flickered to life.

Celeste's breathing became noticeably faster.

Rebecca noticed.

"So..."

she said quietly,

"they weren't broken."

Adrian selected footage from three days earlier.

The kitchen appeared.

Timestamp: 7:12 AM.

Lily sat quietly at the breakfast table.

She wasn't making noise.

She wasn't playing.

She was reading a children's book.

Celeste entered carrying two plates.

One held eggs, toast, strawberries, and juice.

The other...

Contained only plain oatmeal.

Lily smiled.

"Can I have toast too?"

Celeste set the oatmeal down.

"No."

Lily nodded.

"Okay."

Then...

Without warning...

Celeste lifted the toast from her own plate...

Walked to the trash can...

And threw it away while Lily watched.

The little girl's eyes followed every piece.

She never complained.

She only lowered her head.

On the recording, Celeste said clearly,

"If you learn not to want things, you won't be disappointed."

The room watching the footage fell silent.

Officer Ortiz stopped the video.

No one needed to hear more.

Adrian didn't.

He couldn't.

He leaned both hands against the desk.

His shoulders trembled—not with weakness, but with the effort of containing a fury so immense it threatened to consume him.

Behind him, Lily's small voice broke the silence.

"Daddy..."

He turned immediately.

She looked frightened.

"Are you leaving again?"

The question pierced him more deeply than anything he had seen on the screen.

He crossed the room in two strides, knelt in front of her, and took both of her hands.

"No."

His voice was steady.

"I'm not leaving you."

"Not tonight."

"Not tomorrow."

"Not ever if I can help it."

For the first time in months, Lily allowed herself to believe him.

She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.

As Adrian held his daughter, Officer Ortiz quietly approached Celeste.

"Mrs. Vale," he said, his tone formal.

"Based on the evidence we've gathered, we are placing you under arrest on suspicion of child abuse, child neglect, unlawful restraint, and related offenses."

Celeste stared at him in disbelief.

"You can't arrest me."

Then she looked directly at Adrian.

"Tell them."

"Tell them this is all a misunderstanding."

Adrian met her gaze with eyes emptied of every trace of love.

"There was one misunderstanding."

"I believed you were protecting my daughter."

He looked at the officers.

"Do what you have to do."

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Celeste's wrists, Lily flinched at the sound.

Adrian gently covered her ears.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore," he whispered.

But neither of them noticed the man standing silently outside the open front door.

He wore an expensive gray suit.

In his hand was a sealed envelope marked with the logo of a prestigious law firm.

When James approached him, the stranger asked only one question.

"Is Mr. Adrian Vale home?"

James nodded cautiously.

The man handed him the envelope.

"This must reach him tonight."

"It's regarding the custody of Miss Lily..."

May you like

He paused.

"...and information that should have been revealed seven years ago."
