CHAPTER 4 – THE FORGOTTEN STORAGE ROOM

CHAPTER 4 – THE FORGOTTEN STORAGE ROOM

Three days passed without a single phone call.

No apology.

No explanation.

Only silence.

Then, Thursday morning, my phone rang.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was the apartment building manager.

"Mrs. Mendez?"

"Yes."

"This is Carlos from Harbor Heights."

"Good morning."

"I thought you should know..."

His voice lowered.

"Someone has been removing furniture from Apartment 12B."

I sat upright.

"What furniture?"

"I'm not sure."

"But several movers came yesterday."

"They said they were preparing for renovations."

My stomach tightened.

"I didn't approve renovations."

"I figured."

Carlos hesitated.

"So I checked the ownership file."

"And?"

"You are still listed as sole owner."

I thanked him and hung up.

Within twenty minutes I was driving across town.

When I entered the lobby, Carlos was waiting.

He looked nervous.

"I didn't want to interfere."

"You did the right thing."

He handed me a temporary master key.

"They're both at work."

We rode the elevator together.

The hallway felt strangely quiet.

Apartment 12B looked exactly the same.

Until I stepped inside.

The living room had changed.

Every family photograph was gone.

The old wooden rocking chair I had bought after Daniel graduated from law school...

Gone.

The embroidered table runner my mother had sewn...

Gone.

Even the framed picture of Daniel as a child holding his first baseball glove had disappeared.

Everything connected to our family history had vanished.

Only expensive minimalist decorations remained.

Gray.

White.

Glass.

Nothing personal.

Nothing warm.

Carlos whispered,

"It wasn't like this last week."

"No."

"It wasn't."

I walked slowly through each room.

In the kitchen, every piece of cookware I had purchased had been replaced with matching designer sets.

The pantry shelves held imported organic snacks.

Not a single bag of rice.

Not a single spice jar from my recipes.

No trace of home remained.

Then I noticed something odd.

The hallway closet door wasn't completely closed.

Inside, several moving boxes had been stacked carelessly.

One box was labeled:

DONATION

Another:

DISPOSAL

I opened the first.

Inside lay my mother's embroidered blankets.

Family photo albums.

Daniel's kindergarten drawings.

His first pair of tiny cowboy boots.

The Father's Day card he had made for the grandfather he barely remembered.

Thrown together like junk.

Then I opened the second box.

At the bottom sat an old metal cash box.

I frowned.

I hadn't seen it in years.

The key was still taped underneath.

When I unlocked it...

I froze.

Inside were dozens of receipts.

Bank deposit slips.

Cancelled checks.

Every tuition payment I had ever made for Daniel.

Every payment for law school.

Every apartment maintenance bill.

Every property tax receipt.

Forty years of sacrifice...

Documented.

But beneath those papers lay something far more shocking.

A small velvet envelope.

Inside it was a hospital bracelet.

Not mine.

Not Daniel's.

It belonged to a newborn baby girl.

Attached to it was a folded note in unfamiliar handwriting.

"If Sarah ever finds this, she deserves to know the truth Daniel has hidden since 2018."

My hands began to tremble.

Because Daniel and Emily had never had children.

May you like

So whose hospital bracelet...

Had been hidden inside my own apartment?
