CHAPTER 5: The Witness No One Knew Existed

CHAPTER 5: The Witness No One Knew Existed

Victor Ashby had spent forty-eight hours in custody before he made his first mistake.

He believed silence would protect him.

Instead, it exposed everyone who had helped him.

Federal investigators traced dozens of encrypted calls placed from his office during the week of the crash. One number appeared again and again.

It belonged to Elias Mercer.

Former head of security at Westfall Group.

The same man who had resigned the morning after my family's accident.

At the time, everyone called it grief.

Now it looked like escape.

Detective Laura Hayes found Mercer living quietly in a rented cabin nearly two hundred miles away.

He opened the door expecting a delivery.

Instead, he found a search warrant.

Boxes of documents were stacked inside the living room.

Old company radios.

Security badges.

Hard drives.

And one locked fireproof safe.

When technicians forced it open, they found something no one expected.

A handheld dash camera.

The memory card had never been erased.

That evening, Evelyn and I sat in the evidence room as investigators loaded the recovered footage.

The timestamp read:

October 14 — 8:41 p.m.

The night everything changed.

The camera had been mounted inside a security vehicle following Victor's SUV.

The picture shook as rain hammered the windshield.

Victor's voice came over the radio.

"Stay back."

"I'll handle Corbin."

Then the video showed his SUV accelerating toward our vehicle.

Not close enough to strike us.

Close enough to terrify us.

The investigator froze the frame.

"There."

My breathing stopped.

A second vehicle appeared from a side street.

A delivery truck.

Our driver swerved to avoid Victor.

The truck never had time to brake.

The collision that destroyed my family unfolded in less than three seconds.

Not planned to the last detail.

But created by choices.

Victor had manufactured panic.

And panic had become tragedy.

Mercer finally spoke after six hours of questioning.

"I told him to stop."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"He said Corbin only needed a scare."

The detective leaned forward.

"A scare?"

"He wanted Mr. Westfall out of the company."

"He never said he wanted anyone dead."

Mercer covered his face with trembling hands.

"But after the crash..."

"He told us to erase everything."

The room fell silent.

One confession had changed the entire case.

The following morning, every major news outlet carried the same headline.

WESTFALL GROUP EXECUTIVE LINKED TO DEADLY COVER-UP.

Outside company headquarters, employees gathered without being asked.

Many had worked beside me for decades.

Some openly cried.

Others apologized.

"We thought you had given up."

I looked across the crowd.

"I hadn't given up."

"I was surviving."

"And sometimes survival is quieter than people expect."

The applause that followed wasn't for me.

It was for the truth finally finding its voice.

That afternoon, Child Protective Services returned to the estate.

This time, not because of an anonymous complaint.

Because they had completed Sable's emergency placement review.

The senior caseworker smiled as she handed me an envelope.

"The court approved temporary guardianship."

I stared at the order for several seconds before reading it again.

Temporary.

But legal.

Secure.

Protected.

Sable tugged gently on my sleeve.

"Does that mean I get to stay?"

I couldn't speak.

I simply nodded.

She threw her arms around my neck.

"I knew Mama picked the right person."

For the first time since Aara's funeral...

I cried without trying to hide it.

That night, Martha prepared dinner for everyone in the house.

Halfway through the meal, Sable quietly reached into her little green cloth bag.

"I forgot something."

She placed a tiny silver key on the table.

"I never knew what it opened."

The number engraved on it read:

417.

Evelyn's eyes widened.

"That's a bank vault key."

No one touched it.

Because we all understood the same thing.

If Diane had hidden a letter...

What else had she hidden before she died?

And why had she trusted Cecile to protect it?
