CHAPTER 4 — The Recording That Destroyed Daniel's Lies

CHAPTER 4 — The Recording That Destroyed Daniel's Lies
News spread through the family faster than anyone expected.
By the next morning, Daniel's phone would not stop ringing.
His parents.
His cousins.
His business partners.
Everyone had heard some version of the story.
But Daniel repeated the same sentence to every caller.
"My sister is trying to destroy my family."
Mariana answered none of his messages.
Instead, she focused on Lucía.
The little girl had barely slept.
Every loud sound made her flinch.
When a nurse accidentally dropped a tray, Lucía instinctively covered her head with both arms.
Mariana's heart broke.
Children only learn reflexes like that when they've needed them.
Meanwhile, Detective Cruz continued interviewing witnesses.
Mateo arrived with his mother.
The twelve-year-old looked terrified.
"You won't tell José I talked?"
"No," Elena assured him.
"You're safe."
Mateo took a deep breath.
"He always hurt Lucía."
"Always?"
He nodded.
"If adults were watching, he'd pinch her where nobody could see."
"What happened at the birthday party?"
Mateo stared at the floor.
"He said..."
The boy swallowed hard.
"...he wanted everyone to watch."
"What do you mean?"
"He told us he was going to make Lucía cry because birthdays were supposed to be about him."
The room fell silent.
The second witness confirmed the same story.
Then a third child came forward.
Each statement matched.
Different words.
Same pattern.
José bullied.
Lucía cried.
The parents blamed Lucía.
Detective Cruz requested security footage from neighboring homes.
One camera overlooked part of Daniel's front yard.
Another captured the driveway.
A third had a partial view through the front entrance whenever the door opened.
Hours later, technicians recovered the files.
The interior of the staircase wasn't visible.
But the timeline was.
At 8:41 p.m., Mariana left the house.
At 8:46 p.m., the front door slammed.
At 8:48 p.m., neighbors reported hearing screaming.
At 8:49 p.m., Daniel carried Lucía upstairs.
At 9:17 p.m...
No ambulance arrived.
No doctor.
No emergency call.
Nothing.
The following afternoon, Daniel held a family meeting.
He expected sympathy.
Instead...
Silence greeted him.
His own mother placed a printed photograph of the torn purple bunny on the table.
"I've been thinking about this."
Daniel frowned.
"It's just a toy."
"No."
She looked directly at her son.
"It stopped being a toy the moment everyone laughed while your daughter cried."
Daniel opened his mouth.
His father interrupted him.
"Did José push her?"
"It was an accident."
"That's not what I asked."
For the first time in his life...
Daniel had no answer.
That evening, Detective Cruz received the forensic analysis of Mateo's recording.
The audio expert confirmed there were no edits.
No missing sections.
No manipulation.
Every voice had been identified.
Including Fernanda's statement.
Including José's laughter.
Including the sound of Lucía falling.
The report ended with one sentence:
"The recording is authentic and suitable for evidentiary use."
Elena smiled slightly.
She picked up her phone.
Then she called the prosecutor.
"We're ready."
Across town, Daniel was pouring himself another glass of whiskey, convinced the worst was finally over.
May you like
He had no idea...
The next morning, detectives would arrive at his front door carrying an arrest warrant that would change his life forever.
