Chapter 1: The Library Tape

Chapter 1: The Library Tape

"Look, Daddy! Look at the library tape!"

Noah's tiny voice cracked from crying.

The rain poured harder.

Richard Hawthorne froze.

The little video recorder trembled in his son's hands.

For the first time since accusing Emily of theft, uncertainty flashed across the billionaire's face.

Victoria stepped forward immediately.

"Give me that."

"No!"

All three boys screamed together.

The sound startled everyone.

Ethan wrapped both arms around the recorder.

Liam grabbed Victoria's wrist.

Noah stood directly in front of his brothers like a tiny soldier protecting something precious.

"Emily didn't steal your watch!" Noah cried.

Victoria's smile vanished.

"Richard, they're children. They don't understand—"

"They do understand."

The voice came from Emily.

Everyone turned.

She was soaked from head to toe.

Her cheap suitcase sat abandoned in a puddle.

Yet somehow she looked stronger than anyone else standing there.

"Play the video."

Victoria's face turned white.

Richard noticed.

And suddenly his stomach tightened.

Why was she afraid?

He took the recorder from Noah.

The screen flickered.

The image appeared.

Library security footage.

Timestamp: 2:17 PM.

The exact time Victoria claimed her watch disappeared.

The recording showed Emily entering the room.

Polishing the antique globe.

Working quietly.

Then leaving when Victoria asked her to help in the kitchen.

Richard nodded.

"So?"

The footage continued.

Twenty seconds later...

Victoria returned alone.

The rain seemed to stop.

The entire world seemed to stop.

Everyone watched as Victoria looked over her shoulder.

Opened Emily's cleaning bag.

And carefully dropped the Rolex inside.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Richard stared at the screen.

Victoria's face lost all color.

The triplets held their breath.

The footage continued.

Victoria adjusted her expression.

Practiced a look of distress.

Then pressed a hand dramatically against her chest.

Seconds later Emily returned.

And the trap was complete.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked slowly toward Victoria.

"What..."

His voice sounded broken.

"...did I just watch?"

Victoria's lips parted.

No words came out.

For the first time in years, the billionaire's perfect fiancée had been caught.

Not by detectives.

Not by lawyers.

By three five-year-old boys.

Noah pointed toward the mansion.

"We found the tape because Emily hid the medicine there."

Richard blinked.

"What medicine?"

The boys exchanged nervous glances.

Then Liam answered.

"The medicine Mommy used to take."

Richard's heart stopped.

Mommy.

The word wasn't supposed to exist.

Their mother had died during childbirth.

At least...

that was what everyone had always told them.

Emily suddenly looked alarmed.

"Guys—"

But it was too late.

Ethan burst into tears.

"Because Aunt Victoria keeps throwing it away!"

The driveway fell silent again.

Richard stared at his son.

"What did you say?"

The boys looked terrified.

As though they had revealed something forbidden.

Noah slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small prescription bottle.

Richard recognized it immediately.

His blood ran cold.

The medication belonged to Dr. Sarah Bennett.

The neurologist who had treated his late wife before she died.

The prescription had been filled every month.

For five years.

Impossible.

Sarah Bennett had disappeared shortly after the funeral.

Nobody had seen her since.

Richard grabbed the bottle.

His hands trembled.

The label was faded.

But the name was clear.

And beneath the name was an address.

A private rehabilitation center.

Thirty miles away.

Victoria suddenly lunged forward.

"Give me that!"

Richard jerked away.

Now he understood.

The watch.

The accusation.

The rush to fire Emily.

None of it was about theft.

It was about keeping Emily away from the boys.

Keeping her away from questions.

Keeping her away from the truth.

The truth Victoria was desperate to bury.

"What are you hiding?" Richard whispered.

Victoria's eyes filled with panic.

"Richard, please..."

But before she could continue, a black SUV appeared at the end of the driveway.

Its tires splashed through the rain.

The vehicle stopped.

A woman stepped out.

Thin.

Pale.

Unsteady.

The moment the triplets saw her, they froze.

Then all three boys began crying.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

The woman looked directly at them.

Then at Richard.

Tears streamed down her face.

And when she spoke, her voice shattered what remained of his world.

"Richard..."

She swallowed hard.

"I'm not dead."

The prescription bottle slipped from his hand.

Because standing in front of him—

alive—

May you like

was the woman he had buried five years ago.

The mother of his triplets.
