CHAPTER 5: THE CONFESSION HE NEVER MEANT TO GIVE

CHAPTER 5: THE CONFESSION HE NEVER MEANT TO GIVE

Rachel's breath caught in her throat.

The black handgun looked unnaturally steady in Daniel's hand.

Not because he wasn't afraid.

Because he had held one before.

The man standing in front of her was almost unrecognizable from the husband who had cried beside her at Mia's funeral.

His face was calm.

His voice was almost gentle.

"Put the notebook on the desk."

Rachel's fingers tightened around it.

"No."

A flicker of irritation crossed Daniel's face.

"I don't want to hurt you."

"You already did."

Her voice cracked.

"You killed our daughter."

For the first time, Daniel's composure slipped.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then he shook his head.

"I never wanted Mia to die."

Rachel stared at him.

"What?"

"I said..."

His jaw tightened.

"I never wanted her to die."

Those words landed with sickening weight.

Not I didn't kill her.

Not You're wrong.

Instead—

He admitted something had gone terribly wrong.

Rachel's pulse hammered.

"What was supposed to happen?"

Daniel remained silent.

The gun never wavered.

Finally, he spoke.

"It was supposed to be temporary."

"What was?"

"The allergy."

Rachel frowned in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

"It wasn't supposed to be peanuts."

He looked genuinely frustrated.

"It was only supposed to make her sick."

Rachel felt the room tilt.

"You poisoned her."

"I gave her something."

He rubbed a hand across his face.

"Ethan promised it would only cause mild symptoms."

Rachel whispered,

"You trusted Ethan over your own daughter."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it."

His shoulders sagged.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not grieving.

Exhausted.

"As long as Mia was healthy..."

"...they would never leave us alone."

Rachel's voice rose.

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the window before answering.

"The people Ethan owes."

Three years earlier.

That was when it had started.

Daniel had secretly guaranteed one of Ethan's business loans.

He thought he was helping his older brother rebuild his life.

Instead, Ethan disappeared with millions of dollars belonging to a criminal organization that trafficked stolen pharmaceuticals across several states.

The lenders didn't care that Daniel had signed out of love.

To them...

A signature was a promise.

When Ethan vanished, the debt became Daniel's.

"They came to me," Daniel said quietly.

"They knew where we lived."

"They knew where Mia went to daycare."

Rachel's stomach twisted.

"They threatened her?"

Daniel nodded.

"They said if I didn't cooperate..."

His voice broke.

"They'd make me watch her die."

Rachel felt tears burning her eyes.

"So you decided to help them?"

"I was buying time!"

He shouted for the first time.

"I thought I could protect both of you."

"By drugging our child?"

"They wanted proof I would obey."

Rachel couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"So you gave them proof."

Daniel covered his face.

"They told me the medicine would only make her sleepy."

"They planned for the daycare to panic."

"An ambulance."

"A hospital."

"Then they'd contact me again."

Rachel whispered,

"But someone switched it."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Ethan."

"He changed everything."

Rachel realized something horrifying.

"The candy..."

Daniel looked down.

"I didn't put peanuts inside it."

Rachel's voice shook with rage.

"But you handed it to her."

"I know."

"I KNOW!"

He slammed his fist into the wall.

"I've replayed that morning a thousand times."

"Ethan met me outside."

"He gave me a different packet."

"He said the original wasn't necessary anymore."

"I believed him."

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"You believed a criminal."

"I believed my brother."

"And Mia died because of it."

Daniel's shoulders shook.

For the first time since Rachel had begun uncovering the truth...

He cried.

Real tears.

Not for himself.

For the little girl whose trust he had betrayed forever.

The silence shattered.

A loud crash echoed downstairs.

Someone had kicked open the back door.

Daniel's head snapped toward the hallway.

Rachel heard heavy footsteps.

More than one person.

Three voices.

Daniel went pale.

"They found us."

The office door exploded inward before either of them could move.

Three masked men stormed inside.

The first pointed a rifle directly at Daniel.

The second grabbed Rachel.

The third removed his mask.

Rachel recognized him instantly.

Ethan Carter.

He smiled as though greeting old friends.

"Little brother."

He looked at Daniel.

"You've been talking too much."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Let Rachel go."

Ethan laughed.

"You still think you're negotiating."

He turned to Rachel.

"I'm sorry about your daughter."

His smile widened.

"She really was adorable."

Rachel lunged toward him.

"You monster!"

One of the men restrained her.

Ethan calmly straightened his jacket.

"You know what your husband's biggest mistake was?"

He answered his own question.

"He thought Mia mattered to us."

Daniel's face turned white.

Ethan continued almost casually.

"The child was never the target."

Rachel stopped struggling.

"What?"

Ethan looked directly at her.

"It was always you."

Rachel stared at him.

"I don't even know you."

"You didn't."

"But seven years ago..."

He reached into his pocket and removed a faded newspaper clipping.

Rachel's blood ran cold.

It was an article about a federal corruption case.

Her late father.

Judge Thomas Bennett.

The judge who had sentenced dozens of members of Ethan's criminal network to prison.

Including the man who had financed Ethan's first smuggling operation.

Ethan smiled without warmth.

"Your father destroyed my empire."

"He died before I could make him suffer."

"So I settled for destroying what he loved most."

Rachel's knees nearly gave way.

"Mia..."

"Was revenge."

Ethan folded the newspaper carefully.

"You weren't chosen by chance, Rachel."

"You married into my family."

"And never realized I chose yours long before you met Daniel."

Daniel looked as though he might collapse.

"You used me."

Ethan chuckled.

"From the beginning."

Outside, the sound of tires screeching echoed through the neighborhood.

Blue and red lights flashed through the office window.

Victor Hale had anticipated something like this.

When Rachel failed to answer his scheduled safety call, he had alerted the police and rushed to the house with every piece of evidence Rachel had collected.

Ethan heard the sirens.

His smile disappeared.

"So..."

He said quietly.

"I guess it's time to clean up every loose end."

He slowly raised his pistol—

Not at Rachel.

Not at the police outside.

May you like

At Daniel.

And before anyone in the room could react, he pulled the trigger.
