Chapter 3: The Traitor Inside the Mansion

Chapter 3: The Traitor Inside the Mansion
For three long seconds, nobody spoke.
Elaine stared at the fraud alert on her tablet.
I read it again.
Unauthorized transfer attempt: $18,700,000.
Location detected: Hayes Residence.
The timestamp was less than ten minutes old.
Victoria was under security escort.
Her parents were sitting in front of me.
Every phone in the room was on the table.
So who had tried to steal nearly nineteen million dollars?
Elaine looked at me.
"Daniel, freeze every account. Now."
I called my private banker.
Within sixty seconds, every investment account, trust, and corporate reserve under my name was locked.
The banker sounded alarmed.
"Mr. Hayes... whoever initiated this transfer knew your private authorization process."
That sentence hit harder than anything else that night.
Very few people knew that process.
Elaine.
My financial advisor.
Me.
And somehow...
Victoria.
Security immediately sealed every exit.
No employee was allowed to leave.
The mansion suddenly felt less like a home and more like a crime scene.
The head of security, Marcus, entered carrying a tablet.
"We traced the Wi-Fi connection."
He frowned.
"The transfer request came from the east wing."
My office.
The room where Victoria and I had argued.
The room we had left less than twenty minutes earlier.
We hurried upstairs.
Nothing looked different.
The lights were still on.
My laptop sat exactly where I had left it.
But something felt wrong.
Elaine walked straight toward the bookshelf.
"Daniel..."
She pointed to the carpet.
Tiny scratches marked the floor beneath the cabinet.
It had been moved.
Marcus pulled the shelf aside.
Behind it was a narrow maintenance door I had completely forgotten existed.
The lock had been forced open.
Someone had been hiding inside the walls of my own house.
The hidden corridor led toward the server room that controlled the mansion's cameras and network.
Marcus pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
But a laptop was still running.
On the screen flashed a message.
TRANSFER FAILED. ACCOUNT LOCKED.
Elaine immediately disconnected the computer.
A forensic technician began copying the hard drive.
Minutes later he looked up.
"I found remote-access software."
"And?"
"It wasn't installed tonight."
He swallowed.
"It has been operating for almost eight months."
Eight months.
Someone had been watching my finances...
Inside my own house...
For eight months.
Then Marcus received another radio call.
"Sir... we've got someone running."
The cameras showed a man sprinting across the rear gardens toward the staff parking lot.
I recognized him instantly.
Evan Brooks.
One of the temporary IT contractors hired during the wedding renovations.
I had barely spoken to him.
Marcus and two guards chased him through the property.
By the time they reached the gate, police officers—already on their way because of the fraud report—blocked his escape.
Evan froze.
His backpack hit the pavement.
Inside were three laptops, encrypted drives...
And copies of my financial records.
Under questioning, Evan refused to answer a single question.
Until detectives showed him the failed transfer.
Then he smiled.
"I wasn't working alone."
My stomach tightened.
"Who hired you?"
He looked directly at me.
"You already know her."
Everyone in the room turned toward Victoria.
She shook her head violently.
"No! He's lying!"
Evan laughed.
"I've never even met your attorney."
Then he looked back at me.
"But I had dinner with your fiancée six times."
Elaine quietly wrote down every word.
Detectives searched Evan's phone.
Within an hour they uncovered encrypted messages.
One conversation had been deleted but recovered.
Victoria: "Wait until after the wedding."
Evan: "Too risky."
Victoria: "Then create another access point."
Evan: "What about Daniel?"
Victoria: "He trusts everyone."
The room fell silent.
Victoria finally broke.
"I never meant to steal everything!"
Her father slowly closed his eyes.
Her mother began crying.
Victoria looked at me.
"It started as a joke."
Nobody believed her.
"It became too big."
Still nobody spoke.
Finally I said the only thing left to say.
"The wedding is over."
As police escorted Victoria away in handcuffs, she turned one last time.
"You'll regret humiliating me."
I answered calmly.
"No."
"I regret inviting you into my life."
The mansion doors closed behind her.
For the first time in months...
The house felt quiet.
But deep inside, I knew this nightmare wasn't finished.
Because detectives had recovered one final message from Evan's encrypted drive.
It wasn't sent by Victoria.
May you like
It came from someone listed only as...
"Director."
