CHAPTER 4 – THE DETECTIVE'S FIRST QUESTION

CHAPTER 4 – THE DETECTIVE'S FIRST QUESTION
Margot barely slept.
She spent the entire night comparing the signature on the prenuptial agreement with old birthday cards, publishing contracts, passports, and tax returns.
The differences were tiny.
A slightly longer stroke on the "M."
The curve in the "g."
The pressure near the end of her surname.
Invisible to almost everyone.
But not to the woman who had signed her own name tens of thousands of times.
Someone had copied it.
Almost perfectly.
Almost.
The following morning, Margot made a decision she should have made years earlier.
She hired someone Lucas couldn't manipulate.
Private investigator Daniel Mercer.
His office occupied the third floor of a plain brick building downtown.
No luxury furniture.
No expensive artwork.
Only filing cabinets and decades of experience.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he asked only one question.
"Mrs. Stephens... what makes you believe your husband started this recently?"
Margot frowned.
"What do you mean?"
He slid the forged agreement back toward her.
"This document isn't new."
"The paper has aged."
"The ink has oxidized."
"If it's fake..."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"...then someone forged your signature many years ago."
The room suddenly felt colder.
"How many years?"
"I won't know until we test it."
"But my guess?"
He paused.
"At least twenty."
Margot felt sick.
Twenty years.
This wasn't a spontaneous betrayal.
It was a lifelong strategy.
Daniel began building a timeline.
Properties purchased.
Companies created.
Trusts established.
Insurance policies.
Every major financial event coincided with one disturbing pattern.
Each time Margot earned significant royalties from a bestselling novel...
Money disappeared.
Not all at once.
Never enough to attract attention.
Small transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Shell companies.
Investment partnerships.
Each one legal on the surface.
Together, devastating.
Three days later, Daniel called.
"I found something."
Margot hurried to his office.
He placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed Lucas entering a downtown office building.
Beside him walked Evelyn.
Behind them...
The notary.
Daniel laid down another photograph.
Then another.
Finally, the last one.
Margot's breath caught.
A fourth person had attended every meeting.
An elegant woman in her late fifties.
Silver hair.
Designer suit.
Diamond earrings.
She looked vaguely familiar.
"Who is she?"
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Her name is Victoria Hale."
"What does she do?"
"Officially?"
"Estate planning."
He slid another file toward her.
"Unofficially..."
"She's been questioned in three inheritance fraud investigations."
Margot's eyes widened.
"Charged?"
"No."
"Every witness changed their testimony."
"Every victim signed the documents voluntarily."
Daniel leaned forward.
"But there's something strange."
"What?"
He tapped one page.
"Your husband has been paying Victoria for eighteen years."
"Eighteen?"
"Regular monthly payments."
Margot whispered,
"I've never heard her name."
"I don't think you were supposed to."
That evening, Lucas surprised Margot with champagne.
"I've been thinking."
"We've both been under stress."
"Maybe we should take a vacation."
Margot smiled warmly.
"A vacation sounds wonderful."
Lucas relaxed.
"Somewhere quiet."
"Just us."
She raised her glass.
"To new beginnings."
Lucas clinked his glass against hers.
Neither of them drank.
Both were waiting for the other to take the first sip.
In that silent moment...
Margot realized they were no longer husband and wife.
They were opponents.
And somewhere behind Lucas...
May you like
Hidden in the shadows...
Someone much more dangerous was pulling the strings.
