Chapter 5: The Man Who Wasn't Supposed to Call

Rebecca closed the journal and looked directly at me.

"Emma, from this moment forward, assume you're being watched."

The words settled over me like ice.

"I think we need to contact federal authorities."

I nodded automatically, still staring at the photograph.

My father.

The black SUV.

The man standing beside him.

Every childhood memory I had of my dad—the man who taught me to ride a bike, who attended every school recital, who walked me down the aisle—collided violently with the evidence in front of me.

None of it made sense.

Until Rebecca picked up the flash drive.

"Let's see what Ryan thought was important enough to hide."

Back at her office, Rebecca insisted on using a computer disconnected from her firm's network.

"If there's sensitive evidence on here, we don't take chances."

The drive contained dozens of folders.

Financial records.

Scanned contracts.

Photographs.

Voice recordings.

Videos.

One folder was simply labeled:

START HERE.

Inside was a video.

Ryan appeared on the screen wearing the same blue dress shirt he had worn the week before he died.

He looked exhausted.

His beard had grown in.

His eyes kept drifting toward the office door behind him.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

"Emma..."

His voice immediately broke me.

I hadn't heard it in three months.

"I hope you're never watching this."

Tears rolled freely down my face.

"If you are... then either I'm gone, or everything has fallen apart."

He took a slow breath.

"I need you to understand something before you hate your father."

Rebecca glanced at me.

I froze.

Ryan continued.

"Frank didn't start this."

"What?" I whispered.

"He inherited it."

The room went silent.

Ryan leaned closer to the camera.

"Twenty-six years ago your grandfather borrowed money from dangerous people to save the construction company."

"He couldn't repay it."

"So the business became their laundering operation."

"By the time your father took over, leaving meant dying."

I couldn't breathe.

Ryan continued.

"For years Frank tried to keep his family safe by cooperating."

"But recently..."

He swallowed hard.

"They've begun demanding larger transactions."

"They've threatened Claire."

"They've threatened your mother."

"And now..."

"They've threatened you."

Rebecca immediately paused the video.

"You need to hear the rest," I said.

"Are you sure?"

"Please."

Ryan reappeared.

"If you're watching this because I died in a genuine accident..."

"Destroy everything."

"But..."

"If my death seems convenient..."

"Finish what I started."

His expression changed.

He wasn't speaking as my husband anymore.

He was speaking like a man who knew he had very little time left.

"I've spent two years secretly documenting every illegal payment."

"I copied every ledger."

"Every shell company."

"Every meeting."

"Every threat."

"I made sure there are copies in places no one can erase."

Then he smiled.

The same crooked smile that had made me fall in love with him twelve years earlier.

"You once asked why I always backed up family photos in three different places."

"I guess I backed up this family too."

The screen went black.

Neither Rebecca nor I spoke for nearly five minutes.

Finally she whispered,

"This changes everything."

I shook my head.

"No."

"It changes nothing."

"My parents still burned his letters."

"My sister still mocked him."

Rebecca sighed.

"Your father may be guilty."

"He may also have been trapped."

"Those can both be true."

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Rebecca nodded toward it.

"Put it on speaker."

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A man's voice spoke quietly.

"Emma?"

"Yes."

"This is Detective Marcus Hale."

"I worked the accident that killed your husband."

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"I've been trying to reach you for weeks."

"Why?"

May you like

There was a long pause.

"Because someone altered Ryan's accident report."
