CHAPTER 4 – A Son's Choice Came Too Late

CHAPTER 4 – A Son's Choice Came Too Late

The silence lasted nearly a full minute.

Daniel finally dropped to his knees.

Not because anyone ordered him to.

Because his legs could no longer support the weight of what he had done.

"Mom..."

His voice cracked.

"I'm sorry."

Eleanor looked down at him.

The same boy whose scraped knees she had bandaged.

The same child she had carried through fevers.

The same young man whose college tuition she had paid by working double shifts after his father died.

Now he looked like a stranger.

"I'm sorry," he repeated.

"I wasn't thinking."

Eleanor answered quietly.

"No."

"You were."

"You were thinking about keeping the peace."

"Just not mine."

Daniel covered his face.

"I made a mistake."

Richard remained silent.

He knew this moment belonged only to mother and son.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"Eleanor... maybe we all overreacted."

Every head turned toward her.

She forced an awkward smile.

"We're family."

"We shouldn't let money divide us."

Richard spoke before Eleanor could answer.

"Interesting."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"You never mentioned family."

"Until five minutes after discovering thirty-eight million dollars."

Her face flushed bright red.

"That's not fair."

One of the officers quietly added,

"Ma'am, earlier our body camera recorded you ordering the homeowner to kneel and wash your feet."

"There wasn't much family spirit then."

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel slowly stood.

He looked at Vanessa with new eyes.

Every memory replayed itself.

She had insisted his mother was manipulative.

She complained that Eleanor's furniture was outdated.

She talked about renovating the house before they even owned it.

She encouraged him to move his mother into a nursing home "when the time came."

He had agreed.

Every single time.

His stomach twisted.

"Did you ever love my mother?" he asked quietly.

Vanessa hesitated.

"I..."

"No."

He answered for her.

"You only tolerated her because you thought she'd eventually give us everything."

She reached for his hand.

"Daniel, listen—"

He stepped away.

For the first time in years...

He chose his mother over the woman standing beside him.

Vanessa's composure shattered.

"So that's it?"

"You're choosing her?"

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"I'm choosing the person who spent her entire life choosing me."

The engagement ring slipped from Vanessa's finger as she angrily pulled it off.

It landed on the hardwood floor with a sharp metallic sound.

"You'll regret this!"

She stormed toward the front door.

Before leaving, she turned one last time.

"This old woman has turned you against me!"

Eleanor calmly met her gaze.

"No."

"You revealed who you were."

The door slammed so hard that the windows rattled.

Silence settled over the house once more.

Daniel slowly turned back to his mother.

There were no excuses left.

No lies.

No one else to blame.

Only the painful truth.

He had failed the woman who had never once failed him.

And now he faced the hardest question of his life.

Could a son who stood by in silence ever earn back the trust of the mother he had betrayed?
