CHAPTER 4 — The Safe No One Knew About

CHAPTER 4 — The Safe No One Knew About

The next morning began with a moving truck.

Not Caleb's.

Margaret Collins had arranged professional locksmiths.

The first thing they did was remove the illegal lock Caleb had installed on Evelyn's study.

As the old brass knob came off, Margaret looked at Caleb.

"You replaced this without the homeowner's permission."

"I paid for it."

"You also left a receipt in the trash."

He looked away.

The study smelled exactly as Evelyn remembered.

Old books.

Leather.

Her late husband's pipe tobacco still lingering faintly in the oak shelves.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Until Margaret walked directly toward an antique writing desk.

"You said your husband built this?"

"He did."

Margaret ran her fingers beneath the bottom drawer.

Click.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Caleb's jaw dropped.

Inside rested a small fireproof safe.

"I didn't know—"

"No," Evelyn answered quietly.

"You didn't."

"My husband never trusted obvious hiding places."

Margaret entered a combination Evelyn recited from memory.

The door swung open.

Inside were neatly organized folders.

Original deeds.

Investment certificates.

Insurance policies.

Trust documents.

And one sealed envelope labeled in her husband's handwriting.

FOR EVELYN ONLY

She stared at it for a long moment.

"I've never opened it."

Margaret nodded.

"You should."

With trembling fingers, Evelyn unfolded the letter.

My darling Evelyn,

If you're reading this, then either I'm gone... or someone has forgotten what this family was supposed to mean.

I know our son.

He has a generous heart, but he also inherited my stubbornness and my father's pride.

If pride ever becomes greed, promise me you won't sacrifice yourself just because he's our child.

Love isn't surrender.

Parenting doesn't last forever.

Dignity must.

If he ever forces you to choose between protecting him and protecting yourself... choose yourself.

Because I won't be here to do it anymore.

Love always,

Thomas.

Tears rolled silently down Evelyn's face.

Not from grief.

From relief.

After all these years...

Thomas had understood.

Margaret reached into the safe again.

"There are more."

She removed another folder.

This one contained records Caleb had never imagined existed.

Every loan Evelyn had quietly made him.

Every repayment.

Every missed repayment.

Every check she had covered.

Every mortgage installment she had rescued.

Margaret added the figures using a calculator.

"$684,912."

Caleb blinked.

"What?"

"The amount your mother contributed to saving your business over twenty years."

"That's impossible."

Margaret pushed the canceled checks across the desk.

Each bore Evelyn's signature.

Each had bank verification.

Each was real.

Marissa whispered,

"You told me your parents never helped you."

Caleb couldn't meet her eyes.

Because he had lied to everyone.

Including his wife.

Then Margaret opened the final folder.

She smiled for the first time all morning.

"I was hoping this still existed."

Inside was a signed partnership agreement from twenty-two years earlier.

The original landscaping company...

had not belonged solely to Caleb.

His startup capital had come almost entirely from Evelyn.

She had never demanded ownership.

But Thomas had insisted on one clause.

A silent twenty-percent equity interest...

held in trust.

Neither Caleb nor Marissa had ever known.

Margaret looked directly at Caleb.

"It appears your mother still legally owns part of your company."

The room became perfectly still.

Caleb whispered,

"...No."

Margaret closed the folder.

"Oh..."

"Yes."

Outside the study window, another vehicle slowly pulled into the driveway.

Its doors displayed the logo of the county sheriff's civil division.

Margaret glanced at her watch.

"Right on time."

Evelyn looked out the window.

Deputies were stepping toward the front porch...

carrying official eviction paperwork.

And this time...

they weren't leaving without serving it.
