CHAPTER 7 – THE FINAL GAMBIT

CHAPTER 7 – THE FINAL GAMBIT

The words hung in the air like thunder.

"The real baby... may be Amelia's child."

I looked at Claire, certain she had to be mistaken.

"Amelia would only be twelve."

Claire nodded.

"Exactly."

"Which means the infant Richard is carrying cannot be her biological child."

She spread the files across the floor, scanning page after page.

Then she stopped.

"I was reading it wrong."

She pointed to a coded family tree.

"The word child doesn't mean offspring."

"It means descendant."

I frowned.

"Inheritance language."

She looked up.

"According to your grandfather's legal trust, every generation of the bloodline is labeled as 'child,' regardless of age."

My heartbeat quickened.

"So what does it mean?"

Claire swallowed.

"The baby Richard stole..."

"...is Amelia."

Silence.

Everything finally clicked into place.

The forged DNA.

The switched hospital records.

The impossible dates.

The child Richard had presented as an infant son...

was never genetically tested against me.

He had simply counted on everyone believing the paperwork.

The "baby" wasn't evidence of my fatherhood.

She was evidence of Richard's greatest crime.

He had kidnapped the last true heir as an infant twelve years ago and hidden her identity so completely that no one questioned who she really was.

Charlotte had spent years protecting the secret.

She had carried Amelia to my mansion because she knew Richard would eventually come for her.

A satellite image flashed onto Claire's laptop.

One location.

An abandoned glass factory forty miles outside the city.

Richard had activated one of the servers by mistake.

"He wants us to come," Claire said.

"I know."

"But so do I."

By midnight, rain lashed the broken windows of the deserted factory.

I entered alone.

Richard stood beneath rusted steel beams, the infant asleep in his arms.

Charlotte sat tied to a chair nearby.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

Still defiant.

"You came without the police," Richard said.

"I expected that."

"I came for my daughter."

Richard smiled.

"Which one?"

He stepped aside.

The shadows behind him moved.

A woman in her thirties emerged.

Elegant.

Cold.

Identical green eyes to Charlotte.

Claire gasped.

"No..."

Richard laughed.

"Meet Amelia."

The woman smiled politely.

"I'm afraid you're both confused."

She looked at me without emotion.

"I am Amelia Drummond."

Charlotte shook her head violently.

"No! She's lying!"

Richard applauded slowly.

"Excellent."

"One sister tells the truth."

"The other remembers the lie."

My mind raced.

Twins.

False identities.

Years of manipulation.

Richard had raised one child while hunting the other.

But which one was real?

Then the elegant woman walked toward me.

"I've spent my whole life preparing to inherit the Drummond fortune."

She extended her hand.

"I'm exactly who Richard raised me to be."

Those last words caught my attention.

Who Richard raised me to be.

Not...

Who she truly was.

I turned toward Charlotte.

She wasn't looking at me.

She was staring at the infant.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

Then she whispered one sentence.

"She still hums when she's scared."

The baby stirred.

A tiny melody escaped her lips.

Three soft notes.

Charlotte began humming the same tune.

Without hesitation...

The infant stopped crying.

Her tiny fingers reached toward Charlotte.

Instinct.

Recognition.

Not training.

Not manipulation.

Family.

Richard's smile vanished.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"You fool!" he shouted.

"Blood doesn't matter!"

"It never did!"

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a pistol.

Before he could raise it—

A gunshot echoed through the factory.

Richard froze.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Claire lowered her weapon.

"Drop it."

Instead, Richard grabbed the infant and ran.

I chased him through the collapsing upper catwalks.

Steel groaned beneath our feet.

Rain poured through the shattered roof.

He reached the edge of a broken platform.

There was nowhere left to run.

"You've already lost," I said.

Richard laughed.

"No."

He looked down at the baby.

"I still control the heir."

He stepped backward.

The rusted steel beneath him snapped.

The platform collapsed.

Richard disappeared into the darkness below.

I lunged forward.

The infant slipped from his arms.

Time slowed.

I caught her with one hand while crashing into the remaining beams.

May you like

Richard wasn't as fortunate.

His scream echoed only once before disappearing into the flooded machinery below.
