CHAPTER 2 – The Jacket She Refused to Let Go

CHAPTER 2 – The Jacket She Refused to Let Go
The warehouse fell into a silence so complete that even the dripping water from the rusted ceiling sounded deafening.
Alessia buried her face deeper into Maya's worn denim jacket.
Her tiny fingers clenched the frayed sleeve with desperate strength.
Then, in a voice so weak it barely rose above a whisper, she said,
"Papa... please don't make her disappear too."
The words struck the room harder than a gunshot.
No one breathed.
No one moved.
The men surrounding them exchanged uneasy glances.
Because they all knew one impossible truth.
Alessia DeLuca...
...almost never spoke.
For nearly two years after her mother's murder, the little girl had fallen into silence.
Doctors called it trauma.
Psychologists called it selective mutism.
Her father called it the punishment he deserved.
Yet now...
The first full sentence she had spoken in months...
...wasn't "I missed you."
It wasn't "Take me home."
It was a plea for a complete stranger.
The man in the black suit closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
When he opened them again, the ruthless Mafia Boss everyone feared had vanished.
Only a terrified father remained.
"Sweetheart..."
His voice cracked.
"I would never hurt her."
Alessia shook her head violently.
"You said... everyone leaves."
Dominic's shoulders stiffened.
Those words had come from him.
Months ago.
On one of the nights when grief had swallowed his judgment.
He had whispered to his daughter while she pretended to sleep.
"Everyone leaves eventually."
He thought she hadn't heard.
She remembered every word.
Maya looked between them, confused.
She had no idea who these people were.
Only that the little girl in her arms was burning with fever.
"She needs a hospital," Maya said firmly.
One of the armed men stepped forward.
"Our doctors are waiting."
"No."
The answer came from Maya without hesitation.
"If she's been sick this long, your doctors already failed her."
Half the guards instinctively reached for their weapons.
No one spoke to Dominic DeLuca that way.
Especially not a woman wearing broken sandals.
Dominic slowly lifted one hand.
Every guard froze.
His dark eyes never left Maya.
"You're not afraid of me?"
Maya let out a tired laugh.
"I'm freezing, exhausted, hungry, and about to be evicted."
She adjusted the little girl carefully against her shoulder.
"Fear moved out several problems ago."
For the first time in years...
One corner of Dominic's mouth twitched.
Not quite a smile.
Just surprise.
Then Alessia began coughing.
A deep, painful cough.
Her entire body shook.
When Maya placed her palm against the child's forehead, her expression changed immediately.
"She's getting worse."
Dominic crossed the room in three quick steps.
"Give her to me."
Alessia screamed.
"No!"
Every man in the warehouse instinctively raised their weapons again.
Not at Maya.
At the sound.
Because none of them had ever heard Alessia scream before.
She wrapped both arms around Maya's neck so tightly that Maya struggled to breathe.
Tears rolled down the little girl's face.
"They'll take you away..."
"They always do..."
Maya gently stroked her tangled hair.
"I'm right here."
"You won't leave?"
"I promise."
Dominic stood only inches away.
Yet it felt as though an invisible wall separated him from his daughter.
A wall built from months of fear.
Months of absence.
Months of guilt.
He looked at Maya.
"What happened here?"
She answered honestly.
"I found her alone."
"She was barefoot."
"She had a fever."
"She thought I was going to hit her."
Every sentence landed like another blade.
Dominic's face remained expressionless.
Only the vein pulsing in his neck betrayed the storm underneath.
He turned slowly toward his head of security.
"Who was assigned to Alessia tonight?"
The older guard swallowed.
"Marco, sir."
"Where is he?"
Silence.
Dominic didn't ask twice.
"I asked..."
His voice became dangerously soft.
"...where is he?"
Another guard stepped forward, visibly shaking.
"We found his vehicle abandoned three miles from here."
Dominic's eyes darkened.
"Bring him to me."
The order contained no anger.
Which somehow made it far more terrifying.
Three men disappeared immediately.
No one questioned what would happen when Marco was found.
Maya looked at Dominic.
"If someone kidnapped her..."
He nodded once.
"They did."
"And your security lost her?"
"They didn't lose her."
His jaw tightened.
"They sold her."
The words echoed across the warehouse.
Even the guards looked horrified.
A traitor.
Inside the DeLuca family.
Maya stared at him.
"Then standing here isn't helping."
He looked up.
"What?"
"The kidnappers aren't finished."
Everyone stared at her.
She continued quietly.
"They left her alive."
"They took her shoes."
"They abandoned her where she'd eventually be found."
She looked directly into Dominic's eyes.
"That wasn't a kidnapping."
"It was a message."
The realization spread across every face in the room.
Dominic slowly turned toward his security chief.
"Seal every estate."
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
His phone rang.
The screen displayed a blocked number.
He answered without speaking.
A distorted voice laughed.
"You found your daughter."
Dominic's expression never changed.
"What do you want?"
"We already got what we wanted."
The call disconnected.
One second later...
Another phone rang.
This time it belonged to Dominic's financial advisor.
His face turned pale before he even answered.
"Boss..."
His voice trembled.
"Our offshore accounts..."
He swallowed hard.
"They've all been emptied."
Dominic stared ahead in silence.
Hundreds of millions of dollars...
Gone.
His empire had not been attacked with bullets.
It had been dismantled from the inside.
Then he looked back at Maya.
She was still sitting on the cold warehouse floor.
Still holding his daughter.
Still wearing the faded jacket Alessia refused to release.
And for reasons he couldn't explain...
The only person his daughter trusted...
...was the one stranger his enemies had never planned for.
Outside, the first rays of sunrise crept through the broken warehouse windows.
Inside, Dominic DeLuca made a decision that would change every life in the room.
He looked directly at Maya.
"You made my daughter speak again."
His voice was quiet.
"You kept her alive."
He took one slow breath.
"And until I find out who betrayed my family..."
He paused.
"...you're coming home with us."
Maya frowned.
"I don't work for mafia bosses."
Dominic held her gaze.
"No."
May you like
His eyes shifted to the trembling child sleeping against her shoulder.
"But she has already chosen you."
